Hey everyone,I got a question or a few.I'm building a ford costum cab short box that has a two wheel drive frame.I'm converting it to a four wheel drive. If I get a four wheel drive frame that's for a long box,can I cut down the frame to fit my short box?If I can how hard is it and is it more work than it's worth?Or should I just keep trying to find a four wheel drive frame for a short box? Thanks a lot.
seach with retsin, two mints in one. I have been pondering a similar situation, it is the safest way to make your frame (uncut) into a 4WD frame. you already have the coil buckets, find a 76-79 half ton front end and the steering, make it work. Lift it while you are at it, so your front axle wont hit the crossmember.
I think it would be a whole lot easier to have someone who is a darn good welder and knows what they are doing to shorten the long frame than it is to reinvent the wheel and put a 4x4 axle under a 2wd.
shorten it.. will be easier... and i wouldnt be to worried about it not being safe.. if you ever seen some of the factory welds you would run for the hills..
Gonna find a "good welder" that is willing to assume the liability of welding a frame back together after it has been seperated?
Most "good welders" would not touch that with a 10 foot pole.
Guess you could back-half that, but that would require a complete cage to add structural integrity.
Tube style front crossmember and using the 2wd frame does not sound that difficult, and sounds much safer than hacking up a frame and scabbing it back together. Not so sure how clean welding a frame together would turn out regrdless of welding talent.
