Replace AOD with C6 in 89 Bronco

Hi,
My AOD is about toast so I'm looking into the option of replacing it with a C6. I don't need the OD never use it. I would rather have the durability and simplicity of the C6. So I've got a C6 from an 85 F150 that had a 300. The converter will be usable with my 302 right? They key things I need to know are will the driveshafts fit up or will they need modified? What about hooking up the kickdown and shift linkage? Any electrical issues? I've read that the parts are availible for this setup, anyone have part numbers?

I do not know what linkages will work for reuse on the C-6 from the AOD, yet my experience is from the E4OD. The TV cable mounting spots are used for the kickdown of the C-6, but you will need the mounting bracket on the drivers side of the transmission from an 88 or newer C-6 equiped truck for the gear selector and the mounting point of the lower portion of the kickdown cable. The cross member will be reuseable because C-6 and AOD used the same cross member but I am not sure of the transmission lengths between the two. Note: the E4OD was 7 inches longer than the C-6 but the AOD and C-6 used the same cross members just not sure the distance. The frame was drilled from the factory for the proper locations of the mouting brackets. As long as your AOD and C-6 have the 'standard' circluar 6 bolt mounting plate for the transfer case you are good to go. I would choose to trade in the torque converter for a 'rebuilt' one, basically a good cleaning is all the rebuild is. The factory torque converter in my bronco is ~1800 RPM stall. You could select others but the torque characteristics of the 300-6 and 302 should be close enough that the clutchs will not know any different. The driveshafts will be pretty close to the right length if the two transmissions are within a few inches of one another, I dont remember if the AOD and C-6 driveshafts are the same from the Broncograveyard. Only thing to miss about the E4OD is the overdrive, +3 MPG better mileage.

Basically, cliff notes to that are:
Yank out AOD and take the TV cable with it. Bolt in C6 (using same driveshafts and crossmember)...buy Lokar kickdown calbe if you want one (not needed) and enjoy.

Glad to hear it sounds like an easy swap! Thanks for the info. I measured the C6 and AOD, only about an inch difference or less between the two. So looks like I'll be tearing it out and putting the C6 in its place. I'll post back on how it goes.

You absolutely do NOT want to reuse your Torque Converter, especially if it's from a bad tranny. It'll be full of burned fluid, sludge, metal shavings....all stuff you most certainly do not want to put into your new tranny. JMHO
