Exclamation 01' Escape starting issue

I searched the forums and could not find my exact problem

2001 Escape 3.0L 4x4 Will not start, just cranks over unless you apply pressure to the gas pedel and hold it there a few seconds. Because if you dont it will die. But once you hold it there a few seconds and remove your foot off the pedel it idle's perfect and it drives great. It has been doing this for a while, but now it happens almost every time you start it. It has remote start and you cant even use it anymore. My wife is not happy!! winter is coming and i need this fixed. Any ideas?

Thanks

You could clean the old one, but it seems that most with this problem eventually replace them.

Replaced IAC

I replaced the IAC sensor and its no differnt. This rainy/damp morning my wife could not even start it. It seems like everytime its raining or damp out side it has a problem starting. It has 120000 miles and i have never changed plugs or wires since i have had it. Do you think this could be a issue with the problem im having?

Thanks

don't know if it will help but certainly can't hurt to replace the plugs. I believe that for calls for that to be done at 100,000. Mine has 96,000 and I am going to change them soon. I have noticed recently a slight loss of power. There is a really good diagram of how to change these in a previos thread. It even includes pics. The front three are easy to get too but the back three are a different story, but the step-by-step in that thread is great. hope this helps and sorry about not having any other info.

try cleaning the mass air flow sensor, if it is dirty, and on a humidity saturated day, can and will cause a major prolblem. try cleaning it first, see if that helps, if it does, then just replace it, as thats the onlyu real cure,

00GT, did you ever get this problem solved? My wife has a escape and a few years back I changed both the upper and lower intake gaskets and I think it solved the problem. However, again it's got 180k on it and I'm trying to remember what I did to fix it last time let me know if you can, thanks!!

i never replaced anything it just started to idle again on its own. But we have since sold the 01' Escape and bought a 06' Limited 4x4 The 01' gave us nothing but problems from day one. From the rear wiper to the wheel bearings! I think because it was the first model year maybe.

I have a 2004 escape 3.0L 65000 miles with the same issue. I have replaced the IAC, cleaned the MAF, cleaned the thorttle body, replaced the fuel filter. Last on the list to do is plugs but I have a gut feeling that is not the issue. If I press the gas pedal, she fires right up.

Anyone else had any luck on solving this issue.

Thanks

Yes, no different, that is because you are guessing. I would of taken the vehicle to a good mechanic, let him guess, don't cost you nothing when he guesses. You only pay if he fixes it. In the long run, probably cheaper also. But in all honesty, it could of been the IAC from what you said in your first post, but when you mentioned the rainy/damp no start, that was a give away that it is electrical and more than likely a bad coil pack(s)

Anyway, with the rainy/damp morning no start up, it is more than likely, a 90% chance, you got one or more bad coil packs. If you're going to fix it, obviously you have to find what coil pack or packs went south. Been there, wore the T-shirt. I had to replace 2 coil packs. When the weather was dry, the vehicle ran like a charm, but as soon as any dampness was in the air rain or even high humidity, sthe mis-fires and hard starting started again, when the weather dried up, the vehicle ran fine.

Also if you do get it running and you get mis-fires, don't run the vehicle to long, you are dumping raw gas into your cat converter, too much gas in there and you will kill the cat.
