Greetings & Salutations
Has anyone here ever slid a toploader up under their truck? I've got plans for a built 390 and would like to stay with a manual tranny for my truck. Just personal preference. As far as I know, the toploaders just stayed in Mustangs and such. What are the pro's and con's of such a task? Thanks in advance.
LAST EDITED ON 12-Aug-00 AT 04:45 PM (EST)[p]The toploader was offered in almost all of the cars, over 130 different versions were made. a Pro would be it's a bulletproof transmission with aftermarket support i.e. they actually make shifters for it. It would bolt up to a 390, although clutch linkage I'm not sure about, perhaps you could just convert it to a hydraulic clutch, I've seen the conversion kits. As far as Cons though you will need a new driveshaft which can be a pro since you can have it balanced perfectly and that will help eliminate drivetrain vibration, there is a variety of transmissions which means parts are going to be a little harder to come by, although they make almost all of them still. All in all if I found a big shaft top loader for a good price I'd put it in my truck in a heartbeat
If you are interested, I have a newly rebuilt (by Best Standard Transmissions in Houston, Texas) top loader that has been converted to a floor shift with a jeep T-176 4-speed transmission shifter. Has new clutch, clutch arm seal, throwout bearing, pressure plate, and bell housing with stone shield.

The conversion was written up in Custom/Classic Trucks a few years ago, and it shifts like a top loader while looking like an original granny 4-speed shifter.

Thanks for the offer, man, but I'm still in the planning process. Not quite ready to purchase. But just for curiosity's sake, how much would you've charged for it? Thanks again.
No problem. I'm not in any hurry to sell the 4-speed, but I thought I would let you know it will be available soon. It is a pretty cool conversion though.

Where do you live? Shipping is pretty steep for a heavy item like this and you need to take that in consideration.
Thanks for the reply.
