Running board support question...

All the running board supports were in a box, when I got my truck (boards were just hanging from the fenders!). It looks like originally there were studs poking out the frame, where the supports mount to the frame. Is that correct? They are ALL broken, almost flush with the frame, both sides.

If they are studs, can they be driven out? Or should I just drill them out?

Thanks,

Roger

i bet they are ground off rivits, not studs.

both mine still have the support struts attached to the frame and they are held with factory rivits....

i'd just knock them out and use bolts myself..........

What 52F3 said. They are riveted. Grade 5 bolts will be fine. I prefer to use nylock nuts, since they won't back off.

On my 50 I ground them off and knocked them out with a punch. I'll go back with bolts and nylock bolts. Like RJ said. I use them as much as possible. I don't like lock washers.

I had to remove and replace a couple of mine. No biggie, some bolts and nylocks work just fine. For my front support on the driver side I actually welded nuts to the inside of the frame as the boxing plates I put in covered up my access.

Great! I prefer nuts and bolt, myself. Never thought about Nylocks though - I find that most of the ones I find at Ace Hardware, are cheap made in China ones, that would rust rather quickly. Are there stainless steel ones out there? Or at least, decent ones made with decent metal? I am so tired of China-made crap, it makes me sick!

Thanks for all the info, folks!!

For some of my fasteners i've used "stover C" locknuts. They are an all metal lock nut, available in gr. 5 or 8, and they are plated. I get them from a local fastener place called Facca Fasteners.

Cool! I like them! A google search shows all kinds of places. Looks like I'll be buying a few 100.

I like Nylocks, except for the rust potential, these look like the best of both worlds!
