The H-pipe is used to even out exhaust pulses and help more with the scavenging effect. I was told that a H-pipe would also help with the exhaust sound. I don't run one in my truck. It has true duals and it sounds fine. If you have one on the truck now i would leave it in.
The H pipe does help even out the sound. It does also help the scavenging effect, especially at low rpm. True dual tend to lack a strong scavenging effect at low rpms, and h-pipes help to allow you to have the best features of duals without the worst features of duals. They are fairly simple to make if you use the kits that are available.
An x-pipe is also a good choice, though the installation may be more difficult. IT does create a stronger vacuum than the h-pipe does, but the extra cost has to be weighed in the balance.
It looks like I need a new exhaust system, mine is rusted out at the H pretty bad, and at the front of the muffler .... would I be better off leaving it out on the new one?
do you have a single muffler. If you went with a dual in dual out muffler, you probably wouldn't need an h-pipe, since the crossover inside the muffler would do the same thing. If you are running dual mufflers, then you should probably reinstall the h-pipe. The factory went through the trouble of building one for a reason.
