Is it ok to fill up your 6.0L while running? I don't really care about the fuel gauge being off or anything like that, just wondering if you can cause engine problems
I never shut my pickup off to fill up. I've been filling it up while it was idling for over 25,000 miles now. As for the fuel gauge, mine catches up before I get the nozzle put up and get back in.
Filling up while the engine is running is fine, however, that's not what you have to worry about, you have to worry about the other people that drive gas vehicles and have only experiance with gas vehicles and some of them can be down right cruel in how they handle it. Most places people would just give you ugly looks, but some people might actually do other things if you happen to leave your vehicle unattended. You might want to evaulate rather or not to do that based on the people around you. Doesn't make what they do right by any stretch of the imagination, but that also doesn't stop people from doing it either.
Combustible gases such as from some joker with a can of starting fluid or gasoline vapors from a fuel spill can be injested into your idling diesels air intake and can cause a runaway engine. Best policy is to shut it off.

Show ME just one documented case of THIS happening!!!
Maybe a disadvantage...depending how long you take to fuel up. Overly long idling does NOT help the 6.0. In warm climate, it sure does keep the cab cool tho....

That is actually an appeal to ignorance, which is a fallacy. That would be like my saying aliens do exist. You say there is no proof that they exist and I say there is no proof that they don't exist so therefore they do exist. That actually doesn't logically follow.

Show me documented proof that its never happened
What is a "runaway engine"? Ingesting combustible vapors would cause it to momentarily idle rough. That would also require a massive amount of vapor if not sprayed into the intake.
I think we all know the reason why you should turn the truck off while fueling. Will it cause damanage to the truck ? Prob not.
But you should be kind to others that are getting fuel/gas and have to breathe the fumes from your truck. If thats not important to you oh well.
FWIW Most OVR truck drivers shut their rigs off when fueling.
