I'm from a small town and fill up at the local Co-op, so I know everyone around. No one complains about leaving it running. As far as a runaway engine at the fuel pumps, I doubt it. However, I have an uncle who damn near died several years ago when his truck and tanker blew up. He was hauling drip gas with another guy, and they were letting their trucks cool down before they shut them off to unload. I can't remember what drip gas technically is, but it is extremely unstable. The other driver popped the top of his trailer open before he shut his truck off. Before my uncle could get over and shut it off, it started sucking in the fumes, causing the truck to over rev and basically explode. When it went up so did the open tanker, followed closely by the other one. Practically his whole body was badly burned.
While drip gas isn't something you are going to find at the gas pumps, yes, it is indeed possible for a motor to intake fumes and over rev.
Filling up while the engine is running is fine, however, that's not what you have to worry about, you have to worry about the other people that drive gas vehicles and have only experiance with gas vehicles and some of them can be down right cruel in how they handle it. Most places people would just give you ugly looks, but some people might actually do other things if you happen to leave your vehicle unattended. You might want to evaulate rather or not to do that based on the people around you. Doesn't make what they do right by any stretch of the imagination, but that also doesn't stop people from doing it either.
Your tellin' me...I was fueling up one time and I always leave my truck run and this guy comes from the other side of the pump I was useing and gets right in my face and says very rudely "Your truck is running" I replied "I know,I can hear it".I know it was a smart a** remark but he wasn't very friendly. He then went back to his pump and slammed the nozzle back, got in his car and peeled out and left.....I couldn't help but laugh.
The idiots that complain about leaving the engine running are also the ones that drive up and block the one-and-only diesel pump in the station, and get out of their vehicle to walk too the store to do whatever for 30 freaking minutes, before they even begin fueling.

Your talking about a different scenerio there, of course, they will be a little more considerate then people in more of the urban areas. I would get my diesel at the local co op but the only one that has diesel in my county is all the way on the other side of the county and fuel is way to high to be doing that especially when I just shut down my truck anyway, I do it to avoid the ugly looks or whatever just in case I misjudge the crowd.
I shut it down unless I've been towing, the EGT's are still above 350, and I'll be pulling out immediately upon topping off. I don't enjoy inhaling Diesel fumes any more than anybody else at the station probably does.
Maybe the people blocking the Diesel pumps don't care because last time they filled up they were choking on Diesel fumes. Just a thought.
Yeah I know what you are saying. I'm lucky I drive home every weekend to work and a tank will more than get me to school and back. I'm lucky the neighborhood co-op keeps good fuel, and constantly checks it for water. It already has additives for lubricity and it is winterized. It costs a little more at times, but I get to keep my heat/air on, and I never have to worry about low quality fuel.
