So I really hate having to ask this here, but I cant find info anywhere else, and everybody here seems to know a bit of this and that. My brothers got a 2005 dodge 2500 with the 5.9L. He keeps telling me it has an internal wastegate or something that lets off the excess boost through the exhaust when he shifts (loud woosh from the pipe when he lets off the gas and shifts). Is this true? It sounds like a neat idea, not to mention much easier on the turbo.
PSD is defiantly a good engine, as well as cummins! Its just hard coming to a ford site to talk about an engine that ford didnt put in their 3/4 and 1 tons.
I only asked because everyone here seems so up on everything and usually knows whats going on. I'd never trade mine in for one.....just was wondering what kind of turbo it has
It's a standard turbo in '05. No Variable Vanes, Geometry or anything else. I'm sure it has some sort of wastegate, but not sure if it's integral to the turbo. I have a friend with an '05 CTD and for some reason on that year you can't get a factory jake brake -- so maybe that's why...

You are brave posting that here LOL joking, the guys here are great and will help you even if it is a Dodge!
It is definitly an internal wastegate, all OEM's will all be internal, what he is hearing is likely an off throttle turbo surge and it is harmful to the turbo. When he lefts off the throttle quickly the pressure ahead of the turbo is trying to force its way back through turbo spinning the wheel in the opposite direction. Not very common on a stock Dodge, is he running a chip?
I will PM you with a great Cummins Forum I monitor he can find answers for his rig.
