Fuel pump question

Got a fuel pump question for ya! I've got an 86 F-250 with a 460 and the "hot fuel" option which means the in-tank electric fuel pumps. For a couple of years now, I've been contemplating taking out the factory electric pumps and replacing them with a good mechanical pump for simplicity. Besides, the fuel pumps are barely able to keep up a good fuel flow to the carb as it is.

A friend of mine told me that I could go ahead and just put a mechanical pump on there while the electric pumps are still in the tanks. Can this be done or do I have to disable the electric pumps so I don't over pressurize the carb? And if I have to disable the pumps, wouldn't it be easier to just take the tanks and cross-over valve off of an earlier truck with a standard fuel system and swap it onto my truck thus eliminating excess wiring and hassle?

The mechanical pump will work OK pulling through the electric fuel pumps if the electric fuel pumps are power or not.

If you do not have enough fuel you might try changing the color of the "hot fuel" option, I do not remember what color is what size hole but there are three sizes. You would need a smaller hole in the bypass but remember the smaller the hole the larger the risk of vapor lock.
