Has anyone had trouble with their shifter **** coming off of the shifter? Mine has been loose for the past couple of weeks, and it is really getting annoying. I've tried glue, RTV and nothing works.
The only fix I have found is buy another from a dealer. I tried every kind of glue I could find as did the PO. I got fed up and bought a new one, now no more second gear shifts with the **** in my hand and not on the shifter.

lol. That's so funny because that exact same thing happened to me this summer. My truck was sitting in the sun hoped into after class and... pop! Came out in my hand gearing down for the corner but my house.
I've heard JB Weld works for this issue, but I have yet to try it. I just shift with the knowledge that the **** may pull off during any given shift. Fortunately, there isn't much need (that I've found) to speed-shift a 300.
haha thats happened to me also, put i was speed shifting and went into 4th way too fast and it came of in my hand but my hand went back and hit the seat...i was like WTF?!?! i guess your best bet would be to get a new one. have you tried gorilla glue? that stuff works wonders
I did mine about a year ago and I havent had a problem with it yet. The solution? Electrical tape. i just taped around the shaft a few times, and slid it on. It was loose so I put a few more wraps on and forced it over the tape and it has not moved at all since. I tried messing with it a few times and it still feels solid. Plus when the shifter is on you can't see the tape. Give it a shot
I got some kit at the hardware it was to fix wooden chair legs, it was strips of thin sheet metal with little holes punched in it kind of sharp from being punched. wraped one around the shifter and taped the **** on, been over a year its still on
Thanks for all the helpful fixes. I got it fixed today after work. I pulled the **** off and noticed there was a hole in the shifter, under the ****. It was the perfect size for a 1/4 20, so I taped it. Then I drilled throught the **** and bolted it to the shifter. The shift pattern button removed with a little coaxing. I had to remove some plastic under it to make room for the bolt head. I put the **** on, bolted it down and reinstalled the pattern button. I don't think I'll be having trouble with that anymore.
You guys are making this so complicated. JB weld? Naah. Glue? Naaah. Electrical tape is a good one, makes the threads larger but it can loosen up over time as the heat collected in the interior during the summer with convert the glue on the tape to a gooey sludge and viola, the **** comes off again.
Here's a good solution for this - and it's free. Find a piece of SOLID electrical wire in the 18-16 ga range, strip off the insulation, and wind it around the threads on the shifter.
That would work if they were threaded on, but they have splines running up and down. What is causing the problem is it is cracked inside under the little cap. You can take a knife and pop the cap off and see the problem. The more crap you cram under it only makes the crack larger. They are not expensive at the dealer and I put a cup of water in the microwave for about 3 min. put the **** in and took it out to the truck and lined it up and popped it on, no more trouble!
P.S. PatsPOS you can't speed shift a M5OD.
one of my friends had this problem, he ground the splines smooth and threaded it and bought a screw on shift **** from ford. Another friend with a ranger fabbed one with 5/16 chain and welded the links together welded a double open ended craftsman wrech on the top of it. A little black paint and a chrome wrench looks pretty darn good.
