Just heard the Sammy Hagar song let Sally drive is the 427 in the song refering to an engine or something else? Maybe this goes in General conversation but I thought these guys would know if there ever was a 427 in a Mustang.

It’s ok here Daywalker, we like talking BigBlocks. As far as I am aware, there were no 427 Mustangs from the factory. The dealer literature suggests they were planning it for ’68 but seems like it never happened. Of course dealer swaps are another matter so it is possible. The 427 did find its way into the ’68 GTE Cougars until the 428CJ took over midyear, go figure! Maybe someone else here has some new revelations.
Well maybe we should ask Sammy, but I would think that he is referring to Mustang Sally. And I think it's much more likely that a Mustang would have an FE 427 in it (regardless of whether it came from factory) than putting a Chev 427 in it. Surely you could put a Fe427 in a Mustang since they came w/ 390's and 428's in them stock starting w/ the 67/68 body style. Who know's maybe someone has figured how to put a bigblock Chevy in their Mustang? Seems pretty sacriligious to me though... maybe I should put my 302 into my Camaro?.... nahhhh too much hassle I think I'll put Fords into Fords and Chev's into Chev's.
Yes, they did. As soon as Ford offered the 390 in the mustang, Shelby had to one-up ford and offer the 427 in his cars, it is believed that there were 50 of them in 67. Ford offered the 427 in a mild hydralic cam version in 68. There were also several dealers willing to put in a crate engine if you had the $$$. There were also individuals who did their own. Ahy of them would make a fun ride! DF
Hi DF! Sorry but I have to respectfully disagree about a regular or limited production 427 Stang for now. The ’67 “R” and “W” code 427's were regular production options for the Comet, Fairlane, Galaxie, Mercury and Shelby/AC Cobra only. Shelby-American records shows only one custom installation of a 427 in a GT 500.
The ’68 “W” code was mentioned in sales literature for the Comet, Cougar, Fairlane, Galaxie, Mercury, Mustang and Shelby GT 500 but no examples have been found to date except for the Cougar GTE. There were a total of 397 GTE's, 357 of them came with the 427 and 40 came with the 428 Cobra Jet when the 427 was discontinued. Even SAAC says that there were no ’68 427 Shelby’s.
Kevin Marti has all the Ford production records from ’67 and up and shows no 427's for the Mustang. It's all in his book “Mustang by the Numbers” and his other book “Cougar by the Numbers”. Yes, the dealers are another story but I really don't think you will find a "W" code Stang, not that I wouldn't love to!
I *thought* Shelby put out a 427 in the 500 at one time as well, but it sounds like you have your records in order and are probably more accurate than my faulty memory. I can say that my buddy (a racer) dropped a 500hp+ built-to-the-gills nitrous fed 427 in his '70 stang back in the early 80s. We had allot of fun for one summer...wildest ride I've ever been in. The summer ended with us putting the Mustang through a guardrail and into the Clackamas river, alas.

Yes the car in Sammy's song is about a 427 Stang. As a matter of fact, ITS HIS CAR!! It was the cover story of Mustang Illistrated about 7-8 years ago. I can dig around to find my copy if anyone is interested in more. I do know, its a '67 with a tunnel port 427.
Here's what I found out. Only 6 mustangs came from the factory with a 427. ALL others were dealer installations, including Sammy's GT500. The issue was Feb. '93. His car started as a 428/auto, was upgraded with a tunnel port 427. VIN is 7412F2A03172. On the side, I found my notes of a GT500 with a cammer!!! I got tired of chasing rumors, but most of them point to Tasco Ford as the culprit.

Hmmm, very astute of you, I never made that association untill you pointed it out (And you would think I would have since my middle name is Aragorn...which yes, was gotten from the same source).

Yes, that's Stryder=Aragorn, but if your trying to associate me with someone else you know, then probably not. Tolkien used Strider as the spelling in Lord of the Rings, so I just modified it to my liking. My real name is Luke. Save me the Star Wars humor, Ive heard it all
