I have a '73 F100 390. I got up this morning and my truck fired right up. It was a cold morning and it was idleing a little rough but nothing unusual. As i started out down the road as I gave it gas it would sputter and stall almost as if it was flooding out. I let it sit and refired and it revved good in park but as soon as I put in gear it would sputter and stall. I think it could be the carb (I have a Holley 4bbl currently). The sputter would usually correct itself after warm up time but nit this time? Any ideas?? Thanks
Thats how mine was when it had a leak between the carb and the spacer.
I would check there.
Then again i have a manual choke so i didnt really think about what blue said.
It has an electric choke but it is not hooked up. The idle was not fast. The puzzling thing to me is how well it seemed to run in park this morning. Now i can't get it to idle for more than a few seconds w/o stalling out.
I have a manual choke on mine, and there is a fine line between able to run or die. My 68 is very cold natured. Setup the electric coke, it should correct the problem. The electric chokes normally stay on for less than 10 min. Just enough to get some heat into the engine.
Also check for vacumn leaks as previous stated. When things get cold leaks can pop up. If your hearing is going like mine use a propane torch and spray propane around the base of the carb. If you have a leak the rpm will pickup.

I got the choke hooked up but I can't get it to fire up. It turns over and cranked up once but died out after about 15-20 seonds. Now when I turn it over it chugs but is not getting any fire, occasionally a little smoke will pop out of the top of the carb but thats it???
Starting to think the choke aint it, when is the last time you dropped a timing light on it ? Sounds to me like it jumped time. Rotate it to TDC (check comp spark hole) and see where the rotor is pointing. Put a light on it and see what it says and if it's irratic or steady.
It has been my experience that when an engine backfires,it can sometimes shear the Distributor gear pin. Consequently, the gear rotates out of time on the distributor. Pull the distributor and check that the rotor is pointing to #1 Cylinder. Good Luck
