The local ford "expert" here says that 360/390 cranks can be visually identified by the shape of their counterweights. He says 360 crank counterweights are squared off and 390 counterweights are knife edged or tapered. Any truth to this? I have 1 ea. of these engines and it was true of my own. Is this a variable or always the case?

I know that a 360 crank has a half moon shaped cutout on the crank flange thats bigger looking than the smaller square notch in the 390 crank flange. I was told that by a couple of wrecking yards and have confirmed this with a couple of engines I've also been able to measure the stroke of.
