I have recently bought a 78 F-150, that has no brakes. First I thought brake pads would fix it since the others were wore out. I replaced pads on back, front seemed to be ok. Next I thought master cylinder, so I replaced it. Still didin't fix it. I have no visible leaks. Brakes have been gravity and pressure bleed. Any ideas?
It has very weak brakes. Im getting frustrated cause I think I have checked everything. I've heard the PPV valve might be bad so that will be the next thing I check. When I bought the truck a month ago I had brakes, no after replacing rear brake pads, lines, and new wheel cylinders the braking has gotton worse.
I can't lock up any brakes. If I pump the brakes several times I can get it to stop but they won't lock up. I think I did a good job bleeding them, have done it a couple of time to it now.
I appreciate all the help. I've thought about the valve also. Although the truck hasn't been sitting all that long. When I bought the truck a month ago the brakes worked fine. The seem to just be getting worse. The more I do the more frustrated i get. is there any way of checking the valve to see if its working right. I don't think you can just buy a new one. Also I will check the vacuum hose as well.
Good brakes should be able to be locked up on soft gravel if you try. I'm not saying lock-up is a good thing for normal braking, but it's one of the simple diagnostic tests you can do if you suspect one corner is having problems.
In this case, I also suspect the prop valve or the master cylender
Well from all the responses I think its the PPV valve also and will check it or replace it tomorrow. I hope this does it, or I might have a 78 for sale.
I had a problem that sounded very similar to yours with my 78 and I replaced the entire brake system minus the ppv because they cant be bought at the parts store and it didn't fix the problem. A week later I pulled one of a truck in a junk yard and lo and behold my brakes worked fine. I believe that will fix your problem. Was the MC bench bled when replaced. I also had a problem because of that.
yes the MC was bench bled. I will replace the PPV valve and re-bled the system and hopefully it will fix the problem. Keep thinking though because of my luck it wont and I will still need advice.
