OK so i drive back to ohio for my 5 year reunion and its F-IN cold here! I wake up after a pretty long night and throw the 4 wheeler in the back of the truck to go riding, i go to start the truck and nothing but jumpy tac speedo and clicking, dead battery, i wake my buddy up and we try to jump it with his ram to no avail, so he gets his dakota and his ram one on each of my batteries ( wish i would of taken a picture) and the truck fires up and throws a hell of a cloud of smoke, anyway the indicator light was red on the passenger side so i went and picked up some red top optima batteries, ive always wanted some of these but didnt realize they were 150 dollars a piece!!!! Anyway my truck starts up twice as fast as it used to and it didnt even bat an eye at the cold weather this time!!
just thought id share!
i dont know my voltmeter jumps around but i think it is the gauge itself bcz i can tap it and it will raise to 14 then to 10 and so on.Im going to get rid of it and get a fuel pressure gauge
My truck has been cranking slowly since its gotten colder out.. I'm thinking its time for new batteries for me as well.. I replaced the alternator a few months ago, so I think its charging still
Cold? You poor thing Glad you got the truck going, I would have the alternator checked also. Maintaining a battery is one function, these newer alternators do not do well charging a dead horse.
I still have the original batteries on mine.. Truck has 135K miles on it, so the batteries have seen some usage. It still starts fine, just cranks a bit slower now that its cooling off.. Last week when it was 90's it started fine.. Now that its in the 40's its slowin down..
Question.. So i just stopped by the auto store.. one of the batteries tested bad.. they replace the bad one and she started up like she should after that.. Question for folks out there.. I only replaced one.. What is the recommendation on replacing both at the same time?
Highly recommended. Replacing one battery in a two battery system has been shown to kill the new battery in fairly short order. I know it's a chunk of cash, but it's better than having to go back and buy 2 more new batteries.
