LAST EDITED ON 09-Apr-01 AT 02:15 PM (EST)[p]I have a quite different setup than most.. Here it is first: 1973 F-250 ton 4x4 360/NP435/NP205 chasis with a 1950 Ford F-1 Body.. Her is my question. I am planning on rebuilding the motor and changing it over to a 390. But, whilt doing that I want to go with a C-6 tranny.. I know that it would bolt up fine but my worry is transfer case shifter linkage. My transfer case is unmarried and on the current tranny there is a place to mount the shifter to the tranny. Is there a C-6 that has this same type of tail with this mount or does it haveto custom made..
Thanks in advance for any insight on this.
My best bet is that ford probably used a mounting bracket off the crossmember. I would almost look in some junkyards for the same year truck and with the C6 and take the bracket off of it. Your old Manual uses the crossmember under the bell housing, right?
Pat, why would you want to put in an automatic? a C6 uses up more than 60 hp just to spin all the fluid and internals, your NP 435 uses 15. Do you realy want to give up that much power? If you really think you must, an f250 with an auto and a divorced T case is what you will want to model you truck after. DF
Well, here is my situation.. I have been wanting to go with an automatic for some time now.. I'm not really worried about the loss of horsepower.. This truck never goes over 65 anyway. But, my reason for this is.. This is more of my crusier truck and will be eventually just a show truck and will never be 4 wheeled again. My main thing is this truck is a pain in the rear to drive in traffic.. And being from the Bay Area this tends to be more of an issue for me. After reading and talking to a few drag racers I know I have decided to go the 428 route instead with a pretty healthy cam. So if I lose any horses I will surely make it up with that buildup. In answer to where my shifter linkage is located, the shifter for my transfer case is mounted right in the tail of the tranny (NP435). There are no mounts of any kind.I know dinosaurfan has seen my truck.. Or at least I think he has.. The link to some pics of my truck are here:
all auto trannys that came from the factory as 4x4's will accept any t-case that ford has ever used. your linkage will bolt right up, and if it doesn't, it should be easy to find something that will in a boneyard.
50 YellowBeast,
The only C-6/divorced T-case I've seen was a '76 F-250 with NP-203. I didn't take a good look at how the Shifter was mounted but as this is the J-style Hurst for the Np-203 fulltime set-up it may not have mattered. I Believe (read 'hope') that ford made C-6/Np-205 divorced style trucks between '74-77. You would need the output housing off of...well just take the whole thing and be done with it. It will have to be a F-250 as the F-100 came with a married style t-case for their C-6/Np-205. In any case the actual mount and shifter is very simple as it is only a big crossbolt holding the lever inplace. Fab a bracket and bolt it to the crossmember. My '73 shop manual shows the following combinations avalible for '73; F100 Np-435/Dana 21 Married
F100 C-6(?)/Np-205 Married
F250 Np-435/Dana 24 Divorced
F250 Np-435/NP-205 Divorced
I was suprised to see the Dana 24 as I thought they were dicontinued after the '72 model year.
I'm sure there are owners of later year 4x4 out on the Message Board with info on availability of the C-6/Np-250 divorced set-up.
Good luck.

Thanks, first post that actually had some info that helps... The last setup you mentioned meets my trucks criteria.. Like I have said before, this truck is more of a cruiser/showpiece these days. I was thinking along the lines of making my own bracket if I am unable to find a C-6 of this setup... Hopefully it works out.
50yellowbeast,
Also look under 4x2 trucks with a C-6. some came with a short tailshaft with a fixed output yoke just like the 4x4 w/divorced T-case. It won't have the mount for the t-case shifter but if the 4x4 set up is too hard to find then going with the availible auto and fabing your shifter mount is the next best thing. Good luck.
