hey guys, i took my 4x4 off roading last weekend and within the last few days i have noticed a squeeking when i pass by fixed objects, the echo from my truck. i have a manual and it only happens when i have the truck in gear, so i know it is atleast at or past my transmission. a buddy of mine thought it could be the u-joint past the transmission? any thoughts? thanks guys.
Some guys have had trouble with the same things on explorers. The cheap fix is to spray a little lube on the inside wheel bearing seals on the front wheels. That only works for awhile. As soon as moisture/dirt get in there it squeks again.
i know that it is not brake squeak or anything that is in thte front end because it only squeaks when i am accelerating and i gear, if i rev the engine when the truck is not in gear it never happens, but as soon as i put it in gear it squeaks. also it dosen't happen all of the time, but i would say about 80% of the time and it dosen't happen when i go in reverse. i am going to put it up and check out the u-joint today and see what i can find. thanks.
The only experience I had was with CV joints (constant Velocity) on the drive shaft on a GMC, they would go bad and you could never tell, but they made a alot of noise (squeaking).
The only other squeaking I had was a rock stuck in the brake rotor (97 F150 4X4) and it was rubbing the metal guard on the back of the rotor. I quess it was suppose to keep those rocks out.
yesterday i cleaned my brakes, so i know that it is not brake squeak, there is no noise or squeaking when i brake, only when i accelerate in a forward gear? the noise is getting worse now and it is turning into a harsher almost grinding sound? i dont' konw. i think i might brake down and take it to a mechanic... i'm stumpped. still any advice would be appreciated. thanks a lot guys.
Since you have eliminated the brakes and are fairly sure about the driveline. The next thing would be the clutch. But I would think you could cause the thing to start sqeaking by revving it and slipping the clutch a little.
im pretty sure that it isn't the clutch slipping, i don't feel it slipping at all. im going to take it into the shop today. i can't figure it out and it is getting worse.
No, I didn't say the clutch was slipping. What I meant was that if you got into enough sand or used your clutch a lot while off roading that maybe your bearing is going out and only squeaks under a load now or that something else inside the clutch assembly is causing the squeaking, i.e slip the clutch a little at start and see if you can hear the squeaking.
and the saga continues...i think that i have isolated the squeak to the rear end. i drove slowly by a building and the sound that i thought was coming from directly underneith me, is coming from the rear. so i think that im going to put it up today and run it(hopefully it will make the noise without any pressure on the axle and drive shaft?)
