Fishing line works well to cut through the adhesive. Then get a rubber adhesive removal wheel from a body shop supply house and use it to peel off the adhesive without damaging the paint. You can also use solvent adhesive remover but it will strip the wax off your paint. I like the wheel better, just don't go crazy with it and burn the paint.
That looks really good. I have a black xlt I'd like to do that to. I have a couple of questions for you about the process.
What kind of prep work did you to the emblems (sanding etc)?
What paint did you use?
Did you use a clearcoat? If so, what was it?
Thanks.
I taped everything off around the emblem. Including a fair amount of the truck because of overspray. Then took laquer thinner to them and cleaned them well to remove oil and dirt. Then just used a high temp semi-gloss black a couple coats followed by a couple coats of high temp clear. I dont remember the brands of paint I used. It seems to be holding up well though. Remember more light coats of paint versus less heavy coats.
You could also remove the emblems and paint them off the vehicle and reattach them after.
I'm looking at different paints and I was wondering about the material the emblems are made of. Are they metal or a plastic base? I'm not sure kit matters a lot when selecting the paint.
