i'm looking at installing a shift kit in my 94 cc 7.3 turbo to eliminate "slushy shifts" while under a load. i usually take my foot off the gas when i'm pulling a heavy load to keep the slippage down on gear shifts. anybody have the same problem, and will a shift kit (and which brand) help the shift quality under a heavy load? thanks, pete
Have you ever reset or replaced the FIPL/TPS on the IP.... what color is it.
DIESEL FIPL SENSOR INFO
DATE 1992
REASON
Early Black FIPL has High Failure Rate
RECOMMENDATION
Always replace the black colored early FIPL or any colored FIPL having 60 thousand or more miles with the late gray colored FIPL.
PART NUMBER

i don't have to let up on upshift, i do that when the truck is loaded down heavily because i don't like the " slushy shift" loaded down under hard acceleration. i drove the truck today again unloaded and drove it to cleveland, everything was fine til i almost got to my destination and the torque t/c started to kick in and out in overdrive. did the same thing on the way home, towards the end t/c started kicking in and out?? almost like when it gets good and hot it starts acting up??? later, pete oh yeah, i've got an ats downpipe 4" exh. and the pump turned up probably 1/16 of a turn and a k&n filter.

If you opened up the exhaust and are taking advantage of all the extra fueling potential, then I would recomend a mild shift kit to help the E4OD cope with all the extra torque. The OD clutch pack is also under designed in the early years (early ones had 2 frictions, some later ones had 3, with aftermarket avalable with 4).
Now about the TC problems.....I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think your lockup clutch piston may be cracked. The only way to replace it is to drop the tranny and get a new TC.
The symptoms you just decribed sound a lot like TC shudder, a very common problem I'm afraid.
In the mean time, I would still check the TPS, and have the system checked for fault codes.
Do you know haw many miles are on your transmission?
