I have posted ads in the classified section here looking for a 48 Illinois license plate, but no luck. Anyone here bought one of the 'new reproduction plates' being offered on-line. You can have anything put on them you want. Any experience or opinions on them? I would rather have an original old plate for my 48 F1, but may resort to buying one of the new plates. If anyone has a 48 Illinois plate they could part with, it would be well taken care of.
Try ebay, I've gotten 3 sets of 1952 Michigan plates off there for my F-3.
I just checked ebay and found 2 sets up for bids for 48 Illinois, auction numbers.
330174013441 and 190161145950
and I just learned an odd piece of trivia about the 48 Illinois plates, they weren't made of metal in 48, they were fiberboard because of the metal shortage during wwII.

eBay and Craigslist are good places, also try your local farm paper. Maybe some farmer has a set sitting in the barn somewhere. My father-in-law saved old plates to patch holes in the barn.

Wouldn't that be Korea?! It's a shame they went back to metal, with the salt they spread up there the plates don't last very long.
Were Illinois truck plates the same as car plates in '48?
There are guys that go around to swap meets sellling plates. I got a '52 NM plate for $20. Needs paint but is OK.

Your right, I was off a war, guess its what I get for trusting the description in ebay.
But as I said, ebay is the place to find them, and there are at least 2 active auctions selling the plates he's looking for.
I've also found that local flea markets can be a great place to get plates for cheap, I've added quite a few to my collection hanging on my garage wall.

Go to 1948 but really a lot of other info on here. I think the 1948 pick up
truck would be metal and have a front and rear designation on them. There is a
1948 rear on ebay right now.
WWII ended August 15, 1945 now known as V-J Day (V-E day was May 8, 1945), the Korean War began in 1950. Because of a steel shortage during WWII, the plates were prolly made of other material, and the practice was continued after WWII ended because the steel shortage lasted well into 1948.

Thanks to all of you who responded to my post about the old license plates. As usual, I learned some things. I ended up getting a 1948 Illinois metal plate (which is somewhat rare) for the back of my F1 at a bargan price on ebay (Special thanks to hamz52 for finding it for me). FTE's are the best!
I told you guys number dummy knows all!!!!!! You should rent yourself out to the history channel-N.D.!!!!!LOL........Bill
Grrr...I did some consulting on Wild West Tech..remember the show? They would discuss one gun in detail, then show a picture of a completely different one. This made the consultants and guest commentators all look like idiots! Never again!
Jess, from Los Banos,a.k.a. mrcman58 is a plate collector and may have some contacts to refer you to.Oh,yeah-he also has a few parts for sale ,as well.Steve.
I bought a 51 TN truck plate for my 51 a couple of months ago. It even has F-1 on the plate. It needs a lot of work to be restored but hey......All I got is time.....I wished.
