My wife told me that she would like to buy an Expedition and I thought I would ask everyone here the pros and cons for the Expedition. What would be the better motor, 4.6 or 5.4. I would think bigger is better, plus what kind of fuel numbers do you see with either motor. We were looking at 04 05 model years. Any problems or recalls on any of those years. We didn't get to drive any YET so I was wondering what you all though of the handling. We did drive the Excursion and thought id handled pretty well. So any insite would be great so thanks for those who respond....
I guess for all those people who looked at this post, noone has any good insite or information for me on this vehicle. Are they that good or just that bad. Should we just stick to a diesel? Does anyone know anything about this vehicle?
Mine is a 03' XLT, and I just love it. I have the 4.6, it does lack the takeoff power and throttle response but it still has plenty of power. As for fuel economy I think it does very well, it improved even more after I installed a cold air intake and a after market exhuast, I don't know how the 5.4 does. I hope this answers some of your questions.
I have an '05 Limited with the 5.4L. Only had it a few months, but so far am loving it. Plenty of power, room and comfort. It tows well, but the most we've had behind it is 2,000-2,500 lbs. Fuel economy for me seems to run from 18 on the highway to 15 around town.
I bought an 06 Eddie Bauer 5.4L 4x4 last June and love it. Got a great deal on it - purchased it at 86,000 miles, evidently a guy drove it around the country for business, so I got a great discount because of the mileage. Just do your recommended maintenance religiously (every ~5,000 m) and you shouldn't have any problems. Highway I get about 18 MPG, mixed use more like 14. I highly recommend this vehicle, although if fuel economy is a high priority you'll want to look elsewhere.
Thanks guys for all the replys. I do have more questions. How are they in the snow? I talk to a friend at work and he said he had a 98 and it did bad in the snow to the point that his wife totaled it. 18 MPG highway and 14 around town seems to be pretty good for me. I would be getting an intake and exhaust for it,I cann't seem to leave anything stock. Thanks guys
If you're driving strictly around town then expect more like 11 or 12. Long road trips at 65 MPH I've gotten 18. But yeah, 14 MPH is your best guess when mixing the two.
Expy's are excellent in the snow (I have 4x4 though, which is always good with any truck - don't know how the 2-wheel drive versions are). The A4WD is a good option too for slicker roads, like a light snow dusting or wet pavement.
Another thing that I failed to mention above - one of the biggest things that sets the Expy apart from say Yukon or Tahoe, I think, is the third row seat. It's super convenient to have powered 3rd row seats where they actually fold flat into the body of the truck. With Yukon or Tahoes, etc., you have to take out the third row. I've used my Expy as an 8' long covered pick up truck many times, and it becomes an 8 passenger vehicle literally at the flip of a switch. Happy shopping.
I did see the 3rd row power seats and thought that was pretty cool. 11-12 mpg around town is gettin alittle low for me since right now she has a mini van getting 16+ around town but without the kool factor. I think we are going to go shoping here soon. Is there a better year over another. The 03 5.4 and the 04 5.4 are differant right? The 04+ 5.4 should be the 3V 300HP correct or was that just for the F150,s?
I would get the 5.4. The 4.6 is gutless if you are planning on doing any towing. If your wife has a light foot you could get 12-14 in town. It all depends on driving style.
just needs some tweeking. I have the 03 XLT. I added a custom 93 octane tune (more hp and better shifting), cold air intake, electric fans, and something called Air Tabs (vortex generators to lower drag - good for .5 to 1.5 mpg, no kidding). My truck is very responsive and fast. AC does rob power though. I am hoping to add some underdrive pulleys for another 10 hp and 1 mpg. My best mpg with all that is 19 hywy, 70 mph on flat terraine. Recently did a trip to NH to get a puppy (long story). With my wife, the puppy and our stuff we did 18 mpg going up and down those hills with the AC on. I think I am doing very well with that, including about 70 or more hp increase over stock.
The Ex is very comfortable, very utilitarian. I have found that at least mine had some foibles - rear AC blend door motor, drivers door combo switch lights died. Mostly small anyoing stuff. Over all, a nice looking, spacious vehicle.
I've only had mine since this summer, so I can't really say how it performs in the snow. Coming back last night from Anchorage, we did run into a light dusting with slush and small patches of black ice in Thompson Pass. Never even had to take it out of 2wd, didn't slip or kick in the traction control once. At one rest area that had a couple inches I romped on it a little and got the TCS to kick in, but it was very stable with no tendancy to kick the back end out.
Give me another month or two and I'll be able to tell you exactly how it performs in snow since Valdez has the highest snowfall of any sea level city in the United States.

I would be careful about underdriving these trucks. The electrical load on them is tremendous. I think you will have issues with dimming lights and such at idle with the alternator spinning slower
Thanks again for the info. I've been looking around and cann't seem to find any 04 05 around anywhere. I need to keep looking.
did anyone have the answer to this: The 03 5.4 and the 04 5.4 are differant right? The 04+ 5.4 should be the 3V 300HP correct or was that just for the F150,s?
redfire, I'm not sure about the 5.4 03 and 04. I can say that it is a buyers market for expeditions. I've had mine for AWHILE now coming on close to 8 years. How anyone can say that they are not good in snow is just plain foolish. I live in a Lake Effect Snow area where FEET of snow falls frequently and I'm no professional driver but I can honestly say the expedition handles things very well. Shes been my daily driver since the beginning and the drive is very comfortable for me. I like sitting up high. Reliability wise she has been excellent. Never have I been stranded. Just routine maintenance. All in all I've been a big fan of mine but I'm hankering for something new. I won't sell mine because I wouldn't get poop for money out of it. When the time comes I will slap on a plow on her and she will be plowing my driveway. Anyway good luck on your purchase and I hope you will be as happy with it as we have been with mine.
