I am a diesel mech, and see nothing wrong with what rob has said,AND TYPING IN CAP'S IS YELLING! For now if i was running alot of short trips, untill the regen issue is work out better i would stay with the gasser.if ya gonna be pulling heavy go with what you want, its your money.BTW I expect within 7 to 10 years, all will be hydrogen.I work on big truck's,not the small one's so dont flame me.I enjoy this site, but not the bickerin.JMO
Sorry for the delay, I was on an airplane all day yesterday.
Full coverage winter fronts in very cold weather are almost a must to keep the engine at operating temps. In moderately cold climates, a semi open cover is needed. You don't want to shut it off completely if the ambient temps are above 0F or you will run into performance and overheating issues. I'm not familiar with Ford's offering. As long as it has the option of snapping open a portion of it, then it should be good.
My experience with DPFs on commercial vehicles has shown active moving regens tend to suffer greatly when the ambient temps drop below 20F. This is due to the CAC cooling the charge air too much. You put cold air into an engine, you get cooler exhaust back out. By installing a device (winter front) to limit the flow of air across the CAC (Charge Air Cooler), you can effectively raise the exhaust temps to more normal levels and almost completely assure a successful active regen. The nice thing Ford has done is to allow a stationary active regen. During this phase, the EVRT closes off causing back pressure on the engine thus increasing the engine out temps. This is a feature neither Dodge or GM offer. It's a good thing all GM trucks come with OnStar. The weird thing is, the same Duramax used in the Silverado and Sierra is also used in the Top Kick. GM allows stationary regens in the Top Kick. Cummins also allows stationary regens in commercial vehicles using the 6.7.
Honestly, I feel the 6.4 has the best chance of surviving cold weather of the 3 diesel engines out there. Sure, Ford tested in Alaska, but they were pulling 16k lbs around at the same time. This put enough load on the engine to keep the EGTs (Exhaust Gas Temp) high enough so active regens could be successful. Passive regens in colder weather are nearly non-existant due to lower EGTs. Also, it is nearly impossible to test every conceivable duty cycle and application these trucks might see.
Another item concerning cold weather operation. For those of you that already have a 6.4, don't be alarmed if you see clouds of what looks like white smoke coming from your tailpipe. This is just steam that is caused by the moisture that condenses out of the air as the exhaust system cools down at the end of the day. Today's passenger cars steam like crazy when it's cold out, now your diesel will too.
This is a picture of the winter front I was thinking of using. It has 4 removable covers that allow air flow on "warm" winter days, 2 on the top piece and 2 on the bottom.
There is an optional cover that goes in the bumper and over the tow hook openings. I was thinking of putting the one in the bumper, behind the licence plate, but leaving the tow hook opening uncovered. In your opinion, is that going to provide enough air flow to cool the engine, while blocking enough to allow it to run at operating temperature?
This second picture is of the summer cover, on the bottom and right side of the grille, and the winter cover, on the top and left side. It shows the removable "warm" winter days covers off on the top piece, so you can get an idea of what the winter one looks like with the extra covers off.
Your feelings about this cover and it's ability to allow the engine to cool enough, but stay warm enough to regen properly would be appreciated. Temps in the winter here range from 5F to -49F, from mid November to mid March.
You should be fine with that. I'd be cautious though in the warmer months of the year even with the summer vents open. Keep an eye on your EGTs if you have a gauge also your trany temp. Because these engines have dual EGR coolers, they require a ton of cooling capacity.
It does look good too! How difficult is it to scub the bugs off of it?

I'm using the summer set of covers now (the ones that are sloted all over), but I'm looking for a better set that has better air flow. Either that or use none at all when towing my travel trailer. They are polished stainless, so the bug come off with a little elbow grease.
IN THE WINTER WERE I'M FROM IT BARELY GETS BELOW FREEZING AT NIGHT AND USUALLY WARMS UP IN THE 60-70S DURING THE DAY EXEPT FOR A FEW OCCATIONS, THE COVERS WOULD PROBABLY CAUSE ME MORE PROBLEMS THAN ANYTHING, THEREFORE WOULD BE OF USE FOR LOOKS ONLY, NOT LIKE SOME PEOPLE THAT LIVE UP NORTH.
INFLAMATORY OR NOT, THERE IT IS. KEEP THOSE TRUCKS MOVIN GUYS
