Hypertech Programmer Problems

I have an '03 7.3 4X4 Limited Excursion with 76,000 miles. I just installed my Hyperjunk Programmer at Stage 3 and had bad luck. Transmission almost overheated and fuel mileage went real low. Reprogrammed back to stock and transmission cooled off and mileage went back up. I will not use the Hyperjunk again. Has anybody else had these problems ?

Thumbs up

The Hypertech folks that sold you the unit should have informed you of a couple of things. Of course, it depends on how old the programmer was, for the newer ones really boost things a bit. Mine is a 2002 and I bought the programmer in 2004, it's been great.

I found out that when stock, if I ran pumped up on level 3, the check engine light came on and almost everything overheated. The mileage of course was worse, the thing was pumped, and couldn't breathe.

Your trani issue heating up is a puzzler, how fresh is your fluid, is it full synthetic? Were you having fun and romping on it like I was?

Since then I have installed a 4" turbo back exhaust, no cat thank God, a K& N coold air kit, filled the trani with full synthetic from Amsoil, added a large oversized rear dif cover and run Amsoil. I also run Cetaine booster since they forced me to run the new low ash crud here in Cali.

I do find that I can really roast the tires, 4" lift, their 35"s and drive around like a hot rod with level 3, but choose to run level 2. I am pretty quick, and really suck up the diesel if I stay on it, but it has been great.

Just towed a 10,000 pound toy hauler on about a 6 hour run going about 65 and averaged 12.9, all the temps were normal and perfect.

The guys at Hypertech had killer support and upgraded my programmer for free twice, you might want to give them a call. My guess is they will reccomend letting the beast breathe and upgrade the intake and exhaust. You can't run that pumped up stock, trust me.

You need to run the Cetain boost in the 7.3 for sure, if your running the new fuel. Here is Cali Union 76 also runs a blend of 10% methonal and it killed my mileage, the Cetain booster and lube really helped. Take care of the 7.3 my buddy has one with over 400k on it, it old school and runs forever.
