Red face A Beginer Modding -- please help!

As mentioned in my initial post about being a newb, well, when it comes to diesels, I AM a newb!

So that being said, I've started to mod the Excursion (2002, 7.3L) and though I don't have really radical mods, I may be running out of fuel already.

I get the P1211 code when in Pgm 2 of my Edge programmer (80 Hp / 140 Ft-lbs) and it feels fast -- definitely, and it suits what I'm looking for in a programmer/display. However, I didn't imagine I'd need a fuel mod so soon.

Those with mods like intake, exhaust and chips. What are you seeing and doing about this? I can't be alone here.

Any help would be appreciated.

With my 120 tune from Jody at DP-Tuner, I too will sometimes get the P1211 code.

Fixing the cause of the P1211 code is expensive. If you are getting this code, it means your stock HPOP cannot keep up with the demands put on it by your tune.

In stock programming, the HPOP is fine and works as it's supposed to, but a weak HPOP (heck, sometimes even a "normal" HPOP) will not supply the volume of oil required by the injectors on an aggressive tune.

You can roll the dice and gamble it's a weak HPOP and replace it with a new OEM HPOP, hoping to cure the problem, or you can go to a high performance HPOP like the Terminator or Stealth.

Both systems are a twin setup costing around $2000. Or you can simply leave it and deal with an SES light every now and then. It's not really hurting anything, it just means your injectors aren't firing as much fuel as they potentially can, under heavy demands, because they aren't being supplied with enough oil.

Great information Stewart. But if I were only getting a code and nothing else I wouldn't be so concerned.

When I'm at WOT and full boost (21 psi on the Edge display) I can manage to get through the 1-2, then 2-3 shifts and then just about when it's hitting 4th the truck bucks violently and I have to take my foot out of it. That sucks!

It's like I'm running out of fuel, hitting a rev limiter or speed limiter ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

By the time I hit 4th I'm still below the stock 98 mph speed limiter setting. I adjusted that through the Edge to 120 but just in case the programmer isn't effecting this for me, I'm below the normal limit so I don't think it's that. I am shifting at about 3350 with the Rev limiter at 3700 so I'm far below that. Now if there's some boost limit in there then I need to know how to get around that. That would actually come as a welcome issue instead of having to fork out $2k for a pump that should have been there in the first place -- just MHO.

So is there an issue with the ECU seeing too much boost? What would that value be and how do I get around that?

Please respond, I want to rock this thing!! YEAH!

That's weird. If it were to defuel, it shouldn't buck like that. At least, I should say, mine didn't react that way.

If it is defueling, I always thought that occurs at 25lbs of boost, not 21lbs.

I bought one of these to compensate for that same problem on my rig. http://www.itpdiesel.com/store.php?crn=102&rn=280&action=show_detail

It's an Overboost Annihilator from Dennis at ITP Diesel and takes care of the defueling issue and the P0238 code that is set whenever you overboost.

Stewart

PS - If you really want to rock your Ex, get rid of the Edge and order the F5 chip and tunes from Jody at DP-Tuner. You'll be glad you did.

Thumbs up

I looked at the "Overboost Annihilator" and that looks like a really good idea. I guess I would need mine set for 20 lbs then because my "Overboost" condition is below 21? Is that how it works?

However, I am not throwing code P0238 and if it seems I am not actually defueling, then maybe I really am running out of fuel?

One potentially stupid question: Is there a relationship between the brand of oil filter (filtering characteristics, impedence to flow) and HPOP pressure? I am just curious if that might effect any of this. Thanks again for your help.

I also just replaced the fuel filter -- just a little preventative maintenance. Would something be amiss about that?

If/When you get the Annihilator, I'd run it as set by Dennis first, before changing the setting on it.

How are you scanning for codes? What type of code scanner are you using?

You're welcome for any help I might be providing, but know this, I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so keep my advice in perspective!

I am far from any kind of diesel tech-head like the guys are here. I too am still way behind the learning curve when it comes to all things diesel. But I'll still share with you that which I've been taught, because I like to post!

Give me an old 302/351 pushrod engine or a 5.4 Modular Lightning engine and I'm good. But I'm still learning when it comes to these PSD's.

Heck, I still can't find the darn spark plugs on these baby's!

PS - All joking aside, do a search in the 7.3L forum. If you can't find any old threads that address your problem, repost your question there.

LOL Very good stuff!

I would definitely try to nail the problem down first before potentially band-aiding the situation with the Anihilator. I like that solution for ECU percepted overboost situations, but if that's not my problem, then that's not the fix.

As for the scan tool, the Edge programmer doubles as a code reader so that's what I'm using to read codes when I have them and I can also reset them as well. I only got an SES light once. I was in the throttle wide open past 80 mph and the truck bucked and snorted and I let off just after the SES light came on. It drove just fine with the SES light on and I was able to reset it on the fly so I didn't worry about it.

I really want to show this thing off to my buddies, but I can't impress if I can't lay into it 100%, right?

You have been very helpful so far and I appreciate your candid approach. I too, am a little more familiar with gas engines -- late model GM mostly

Thanks very much. I wonder why others haven't jumped in on this topic? I can't be the only one who has experienced this.

You can find some diesel tech here in the Excursion forum, but you'll find more specificity here regarding the Excursion than anything else.

Seriously, do a search at the 7.3L forum. If you can't find your question already answered with a search, then post a new thread and you'll get TONS of responses.

NEW INFORMATION:

Does anyone think any of these are viable reasons as to the solution to my bucking problem at WOT?

Hello Brian,

Your P1211 code is a code that is ICP related and is generaly present any time you have a chip or programmer on the vehicle.

As for your surging and bucking I would think that could be more fuel system relataed than HPOP related. But it is possible that your IPR may need cleaning or your ICP may be on the fritz. I have also seen bucking when a CPS is on its way out. Unfortunatly it is very hard to diagnose problems without having the vehicle in front of me.

As of right now we currently do not have any dual pump systems available as we are in the process of changing over to a completely new HPO system and will not have it available to the public for 4-6 weeks.

If you have any other questions please let me know and I will try and help however I can.

Thanks,
Darrell Keil
