4 wheel drive hubs
A little history of my problem: 1999 f-250 super duty 4x4
i bought the truck 5 years ago used w/ about 65,000 on it. I puchased approx. 150 miles from my home. on the way back i started to get a load roar out of the left side hub, after going over a bump in the road. the roar would go away when i would switch the elec. selector to 4-wheel then back to 2- wheel. When i took the truck in to a shop, they repaced my hubs with warn hubs. Now 5 years later and another 100,000 miles it started the same the same sympton and it is on the left side again. I took the hub off all the insides were very dry and dusty alot of dust from metal wear. the right side has never given me a problem and when i removed the hub cover on theleft it is very clean and well lubed inside. now back to the right side.( i am not sure if i an naming the parts right) i further dismantled a larger section that had the wheel studs on it, it goes over the short axle and a liitle bearing that rides over the axle is shot. also the long axle seems very loose int the housing. what is causing this side to dry out, while the other side is remaining in good shape. Any comments or advice would be very help full also is there any link i can go to that show me some pictures or a diagram of the area i am working on. THANKS

The steering knuckle is connected to the truck axle arm by ball joints.
The spindle, which is what the wheel bearings fit over, fits inside the steering knuckle and is held in place with 5 (?) bolts. Inside the spindle is caged needle bearings that supports and centers the front wheel axle shaft. On the back of the spindle is a very important oil/grease seal and probably the root of your problem. There is also a axle shaft rolling diaphram seal on the wheel drive shaft that fits up against the back of the spindle.
The hub is what the wheel bearings and races fit inside The hub fits over the 8 lug bolts on the rotor. There is a wheel bearing seal in the back of the hub that plays an important role in keeping dust, dirt and water out. The only other seal on the Warn 4X4 locking hub.
You probably need to replace the caged needle bearings and seals in the spindle and the wheel bearing seal in the hub. Check all the bearings out carefully replace them if needed. Be sure to grease the bearings liberally with high temp grease.
If you send your email address to me at jsscorpio@hotmail.com I will send you a breakdown of the parts and the order they are assembled. Be sure to put "Ford Information" in the subject line so I will spot it amongst the other emails.
