I have an 04 250 with the 5.4l, I know it is a poor choice but all I could afford all the time. I have had alot of troubles with the MAF and IAT codes, I put a new MAF from a lighting on the truck and then got the IAT trouble code. After reading some other forums on this site I realized I had to install a seperate IAT sensor because the lightnng MAF didn't have one like the factory MAF did. After installing the IAT and celebrating the CEL Defeat it reared it's ugly head again, now giving me a Engine lean in banks 1 and 2. Any suggestions on where to look next and could the small gap in the mounting plate and MAF be the cause of my problems?
First, I don't think that it's a poor choice of a truck--There's nothing wrong with an F-250 with a 5.4L engine. I have a similar truck, and I am very satisfied with it.
Secondly, why are you putting the wrong parts on the truck ??? It is designed to run with the proper parts. A MAF sensor from an F-150 lightning is not going to make it run any faster or better. If I were you, I would get the proper Mass Air Flow sensor and the proper Inlet Air Temperature sensor and then see if you have any more codes popping up.
you either have to get the ecm calibrated for that mass air sensor, or get the right one. if you still have your old one try to clean it first. the lighting has bigger injectors so it is not putting enough fuel in.
The reasoning for the upgraded parts is the eventual supercharger upgrade, which will be going on in a few months. I have gotten alot of the recommendations from a very reputable Ford performance shop nearby. The MAF is compatible with the ecm, the only difference is the slightly larger size. I only had to add the IAT sensor to make the swap work properly.

yes, the sensor is compatible with the ecm, but not the injectors. your truck has 19lb maybe 24lbs injectors. the lighting has 39lb injectors. if you are going to put a supercharger on it then put the 39lb injectors in the truck. if you want to keep your stock injectors for now then you have to have the ecm reprogramed. the mass air flow sensor and the injectors have to match.
the mass air flow sensor works off of 5volts. a stock maf sensor can read 500cfm. the lighting can read 900cfm but it still uses 5 volts. the ecm opens the injectors x amout of time for 2volts from the maf sensor. at 2volts your stock maf sensor there maybe 200 cfm coming in. with the lighting maf it would be more like 400cfm but still x amout of fuel. if you put in bigger injectors then there will be more fuel for the same amount of injector duration. since you have more air coming in than the computer knows about you are getting a lean code.
Makes sense, would anyone happen to know a source for a MAF that might be cheaper than going to the dealership. My old MAF was coated with K & N oil and can't be cleaned well enough to read properly, which was the beginning of this fiasco.
Have you found the SC your going to put on your truck I've been looking at doing it but I can't Find one for an 5.4L F250 they are all for 150's I guess I could take one off a lightning but thats too much work and money. I looked at Vortech SC and no one could tell me if the where compatible with the F250s and plus they are really expensive. So instead I'm getting ready to put 4.88 gears in it and atleast be able to pull overdrive with no problem I think I have come to the conclusion my truck is just going to be slow and thats all you can do. then eventually pay it off and then go buy a 06 diesel.

it would be easier and cheaper to put a turbo on it. plus a turbo will outperform a supercharger. i will be doing it here soon. already got my cobra done.
I would really like to know your plan on turboing your 5.4L I'm very interested and how much it would cost.

if you go the junkyard way you can do it for about $600. if you go with new parts you can spend a lot of $$$$. i plan on using a t4 turbo and a small intercooler. i will not be running very much boost. you can mount the turbo under the cab, after it goes into a single exhaust. you can buy the inlet and outlet flanges from jegs and weld them on to your exhaust. use can use pvc pipe for the air side or go to a muffler shop and bend you some pipes. use lighting maf sensor and injectors. i will only be running about 5-6lbs. it should cost me about $1500 using new parts
The supercharger kit that I was looking at install is a Kenne Bell kit. It includes all of the hardware, and computer upgrades for the vehicle. I have a friend that can get the kit for around $4k plus about $700 to have it installed. But it is guaranteed to give about 80-100 more horsepower without having to do any more serious mods running 8 lbs of boost. Any more than that then you will have to do some drive train upgrades.
