I was wondering what the gas mileage on a 427 was? and which years made the best horsepower around a reasonable RPM? would i be smarter to not bother searching for a 427 and get this 1971 460 my friend has? thanx for any help
In a recent HOT ROD article (Jan 2000 page 106) they took a 427 thunderbolt across country, it had 2 4v carbs highriser heads and intake, 13:1 compression and the distributor turned back to run on pump gas and he got 12 miles a gallon. You can build either engine, the 427 will have more horsepower with factory parts or mild performance addon's, but the 460 can be built cheaper. the 427 is marginally lighter, but a lot more expensive, the 71 460 should still be low deck small combustion chamber, which is a good start, I'd probably go with the 460 if you dont have a 427 lined up already and want to start and finish the engine soon
LAST EDITED ON 23-May-01 AT 05:07 AM (EST)[p]This is just a comparison, but before I got to adjusting the holley two barrel on my 390, I got 17mpg. No lie! Blew my mind when I figured that mileage up. This truck gets better mileage than some newer trucks that I know. (those that run v-8's that is)
Like I said just a comparison, I need to se if I can re-adjust the carb back to where it was before.

thanx for the help, i do think the 460 would be a better option since it has a 460 in it already, just worn out. if i could find a 427 i would like that because the weight but other than that i guess the case here is basically what comes into my hands first is what i use.
