I just ran into something strange. Today I seperated what I thought was a 352 from a tranny and transfer case. The strange thing is it had a flexplate with a counter-weight also the center of the flexplate is cracked out. I know that the engine is not a 428 because it has a 3.5 inch stroke. Did some idiot put the wrong flexplate on it and is this the reason that it failed. The crankshaft flange has a half moon and a square knotch if this indicates anything.
I haven't seen that before, I just looked at my spare 390 crank and found one 1 notch and it's square. We are talking about the outer part of the flange where the flywheel bolts on, right? Never saw two notches there, but who knows maybe someone got grinder happy?
It looks like either the person used the wrong flywheel or someone balanced it that way. I understood that you could balance an engine that way, but they usually remove metal from the crank not add it to the flywheel.
Sounds like an amature rebuild job to me, I'd double check the stroke. And yes, if it's not balanced properly it will cause problems. Did it shake and never smooth out?
The notch is machined into the flange and the other one is cast into the flange. The flywheel was drilled opposite of the wieght maybe to counter balance the flywheel. I bought the setup from the junkyard and I'm thinking that was the reason the truck was scraped. I bought it for the transmission and transfercase.
