Unhappy Cheap Tranny's

Well on my way to work this morning my tranny I just put in the 78 broke. I downshifted to slow down for the corner and there was a loud snap, the truck shook, stepped on the gas and the motor just reved with some funny noises from the tranny. I still had first so I limped it into the plant.

Thanks for the offer Fom, however this seems to be a somewhat rare tranny these days and they are not really interchangeable with anything out there. If I have to I will but it is extra work and I am kinda sort on time right know. I would have to change the bell housing, lenghten drive shaft, speedodmeter cable is on the other side and the linkage wont work. All things considered though if worse comes to worse I will take you up on your offer. It is a nice truck to drive and I have enjoyed driving it and it makes a great runabout, so I want to get it backup and running ASAP.

I got one that was put on a 63 unibody 292. It was put on that truck, don't know what it originally came from though.

What tranny is in there? I thought it was a 4 speed.
What ever it is there must be a good used one around, lately it seems that it gets way too expensive to repair anything most of the time.
Like SGI says, you drove down here with used parts in your vehicle.....

Man that sucks to hear that your tranny went. Are you going to try to take it apart?

I took my 56 M100 3 speed apart untill all the little bearings/gears/shafts started to fall out.....Never again....
I took it to a friend who`s a Ford mechanic, he rebuilt the whole trans for afew wobbley pops, I supplied the parts.

Is it pretty complicated in there? I have taken apart a really old 1930's ford transmission apart before and it wasnt that bad, but I assume it was alot less complicated then a 1978 one.

Actually it`s not that complicated but I really hate all the little needle bearings that fly apart.
I don`t know any of the little tricks to install them back in....

Well you supposed to use a dummy shaft in the cluster gear so all the needle bearings don't fall out.

I prefer to use Marvin, he knows Ford trucks inside and out from Flatties to diesels.
More than I ever will or even want to I suppose!
