I recently purchased a truck with a 360/390 in it upon tearing it apart I noticed that the crankshaft had a half moon cutout on the flange so i thought that it was a 360. when I took it to the machine shop to be pollished, the machinest said that according to the #'s it was a 330 crank. I though that he just misread the #'s so I installed it into the engine and then measured the stroke.
it has a 3.25in stroke. I then did the math and
3.25 stroke X 4.05 bore = 330ci
has anyone ever heard of these engines?? or does anyone have any experience with them. also does it use 360 or 390 rods and/or pistons. Or is it an engine all to itself
Brian, yes we have heard of such an animal. It was a medium duty truck engine ( FT maybe ? ) that came in some 1 & 1/2 ton trucks or bigger. I will have to dig out my books to tell you more. DF
I know I saw a 330 once for a woodchipper, it would suck a whole tree in at once it seemes, ford also made the 332 for cars. I imagine the crank would be great for a high RPM engine since the stroke is short enough you could run a really long rod.
Yes, Virginia, there is a 330 Ford. It's an FT engine, so it will have lower compression than an FE engine. Also should have a steel crank. Although they are externally identical to the FE, they are purpose built for more trucky uses rather than high performance. They weigh a lot and don't make wonderful power. Since they are externally identical to the FE, you could use most of the external parts--water pump, fuel pump, valve covers, etc--on an FE if you need to.
I just saw one of these for the first time at an auction a few days back. Ford also made a 361 and 391 FT.
