Breather for rear diffential

OK, I can't find a breather anywhere on my 9 inch ford housing? I have the connection for the brake lines on one side and nothing anywhere else. Are there 9 inch without the breathers? or where should it be? LOL.... Please help so I can breath easier

Some times hold down for Y connection block for the brake lines is the breather. It has to have a breather somewhere.....

The breather is the brake fitting bolt. Twist the top of that bolt and it should rotate. It's just a simple cap crimped over the end.

Morris, I looked everywhere. The Y connection for the brake lines, screws into the housing of the rearend with a bolt, I can't see how that would possibly breathe? . There is no breather around there. I did a search on the internet and it looks like most don't have a breather and some drill a hole and install a breather? I know my rearend is from a Early 60's F100 9 inch. Maybe they didn't come with one? Don't know.

51- Are you talking about the Y connector for the brake lines? What brake fitting bolt are you referring to? The Y connector on mine is tight to hold down the Y connector?

There are two kinds; older ones have a bolt that has a sheet metal cap over the top, that like said above, is just crimped over to retain it. It is supposed to be loose enough to vent when the air in the axle heats up. Newer ones have a bolt with a barb fitting on top for a breather hose. It could be someone has replaced the special bolt with a plain bolt, in which case you need to get the right one.

If someone replaced this bolt on my Y connection, this means my rearend is not venting? Is this the cause for my axle seal and pinion seal on the third member leaking? Am I building pressure in the rearend forcing the oil past the seals?

That would be my guess, a breather is definitely needed to relieve the pressure in the differential.

I'm glad this post came up because I had no idea why there was a loose cap on top that bolt on my Y connection.

Personal opinion, I'd look for the kind with the tube connection. Every time I pull the axles on one with the jiggle-cap, there's a bunch of dirt in the left tube....

I was actually thinking about removing the bolt, drilling it out, tapping the one end and installing a barb fitting. I think that might work. Do the auto parts sell these vent devices?
