"Today in the local junk yard I saw a 79 F250 supercab long bed with normal dual tanks and a 3rd tank in the rear wheel well. It was on the driver side and the filler neck stuck out between the top of the tire and rear fender lip. It had the aux springs in the rear and 460 C6 and D60 with 4.10 gears which I would imagine it was a camper special or the like but I didnt see any emblems to confirm this. This could be a total bolt on aftermarket tank but I thought it was rather nicely installed for it to be anything but factory. Anyone ever seen this?"
This is exactly the same setup that was in my 74 F350Sc...

The only F Series auxillary tanks Ford offered beginning in 1967 are on the left side inside the frame rail. No wheel well tanks, no right side tanks, no tanks mounted in the bed.
In the 1960's thru the early 1970's, the Fey Bumper Company offered several different optional gas tanks. I've seen both saddle tanks and a single tank that was mounted about where Ford first mounted their auxillary tank from 1967/72.
How to ID these aftermarket add on tanks on 1967/72's: The give-away is where Fey mounted the filler neck and cap = above the "bumpside" scallop line. Ford's neck and cap are mounted below this scallop line.
