Thanks for all your guy's help! Got it running SUPER GOOD! What I ended up doing is buying an entire duraspark distributor with new cap and rotor. I used the magnetic trigger from the distributor with my MSD 6AL ignition box and it worked perfect! only 3 or 4 wires to complete the conversion! Now I have full timing advance.
My only problem is: with my new dist. it has a brand new gear on it, before i put this distibutor in the old one worked fine. No advance with that one though, i ran that distributor for years so the gear was worn and the cam ran on it for about a year. When I put this new distributor in I now have a "knock". I dont know where its contacting! Its a constant knock and rises with engine rpm. At 700rpm I cant hear it or feel it. Above 1500rpm I can feel and hear it. Should I just keep running it till it wears down? Or what could be happening with my "knock." Should I put engine break in lube on the gear? I used engine oil on the gear before I installed it.
Can you tell how fast the knock is? The cam and dist only turn half the speed of the crankshaft. Stare at the lower pulley as it knocks, and see if there is a pattern to the knock.
It sounds like the knock only happens every TDC of cylinder #1. just that pattern and rises with engine speed. I let my older brother borrow my truck and I hope I dont have rod knock on my brand new engine I built. It may not be that its following TDC but its at that rate.
At 600rpm almost invisible, at 1000rpm every second the knock appears. After I ran the motor for 10min on the new dist. the knock was bad. After I let it sit an hour the knock was much less as far as how loud it was.
