Well, I pulled the 240 I6 and found the mysterious water leak the old owner was afraid to tackle... turns out a freeze plug had come out on the back of the block, I suspect it was overheated as the rad was full of junk and the rad hoses were collapsed.
Anyway, we cleaned and painted the motor, slid it back in, rebuilt the carb and ran it. Runs good, could have probably changed the rings when it was out (doh) but the blowby isn't tooo bad.
Only problem keeping me from driving this thing is the carb, I rebuilt it but just as it did before the rebuild, when the motor is run then sits... the carb starts oozing fuel everywhere, obviously the seat is worn and the needle won't seal it.. so the pressure in the fuel line is pushing past the needle and seat and filling the bowl way too much. The seat is part of the carb housing and can't be changed. Does anyone know of a fix for this or have an old carb sitting around? Its a 1bbl Autolite or Holley, it doesn't say but it is the original one to this truck.. also, it has 1.29 cast into the base.
I already tried lowering the float level to try to get it to jam the needle closed when the fuel level starts to come up, but no dice.
Maybe someone has a 2bbl intake laying around for the 240 or 300 I6? The 1bbl seems so.... pathetic and restrictive, even my flathead v8 has a 2bbl and it's a smaller motor at 239ci.
That`s too bad about the carb problem, maybe a factory exchange rebuilt carb would help?
Any pictures of your new ride and did you ever sell your 72 yet? If not at least you have a back up.
I am seriously considering pulling the 302 from the '72 and transplanting it in the '66.... as the bellhousings are the same. The 302 runs like a champ, only problem is the C4 is getting tired... but that don't matter if I mate it to the 3 on the tree from the '66.
Here is another question... anyone have a '80 or older 289, 302, or 351 flywheel for manual tranny? That is the only piece to the swap puzzle.
Oh, and another question... if I pull the 302, I'll sell the '72 for dirt cheap with the 240 I6 in the box... it'll mate up to the C4 with the proper flexplate. It doesn't burn oil bad enough to throw it out, it would make a kickass farm truck or sunday trip to the dump truck Probably ask $900 obo for the '72 in the condition described above. I know Snowking must be thinking about it....
True, the 302 with the Holley Double Pumper will get worse milage.... but it sure can lay rubber! Should be tons of fun with a stick.....
I considered putting the 450hp 390 in the '66 but that is a little too "non-practical"
Dueller, I considered rebalancing... but a flywheel shouldn't be hard to find.
