So the starting system in my 90 f250 5.8L is giving me troubles. Recently after driving it if turned off it would be difficult to start or not start at all due to an ailing starter. I just changed the starter, solenoid, and power wires from the battery to solenoid from solenoid to starter and from battery to alt. Also grounds from battery to block and to frame. the problem is when I turn the key in the ignition the buzzer comes on but that is all. It will not turn over. You can also see a small amount of smoke from solenoid. The battery is fine and I am using a flat style replacment solenoid with 2 large terminals and 2 smaller ones. The small ones are labelled S and I. I was told that the feed wire from the ignition goes to the small S terminal and the other small one is for auxilary power for lights or other. On the large terminal the power from the battery postive goes to the large lead furthest from the S terminal as well as 3 or 4 other wires, (not sure where they go?) and the large terminal on the other side goes to the starter. Is this right? Any suggestions?
The "I" terminal is for a wire going to the coil on older style trucks. Your truck doesn't use this.
Smoke is a sign of a problem in that area. The first thing I would do is MAKE SURE THE TRUCK IS IN PARK OR NEUTRAL, and take a small jumper wire and jump the large terminal on the solenoid that goes to the battery, to the small s terminal on the solenoid. The solenoid should click, and the engine should turn over. If it does, then it sounds like your problem is up in the area of the neutral safety switch or the ignition switch. If it doesn't turn over, your problem is out at the soleniod, starter, or the battery/battery cables.
Maybe the smoke is from the fusible links in that area, they can look good but be burnt
grab them and give a tug. Hook a multimeter to them and check for voltage!!
