Headlight buckets

Is there any difference in the headlight buckets for a 1954 F-100 and a 1956 F-100? I have a '54 but I am installing a '56 grill, lower valance, & air deflectors. I bought the truck already dismantled and it came with 6 headlight buckets. The only difference I can see in them is the number of retaining springs inside the housing. Four of them have 2 springs and the other two have 3 springs. Can anybody tell me if these fit the '56 set up and if so, which one? Thanks, Steve

The 53-55 buckets are slightly bigger than the 56's. I just did this. I used my grinder to remove the lip on the 55 bucket to fit the 56 grill.. about 1/8" all around.

And you need the 56 air dams with the dimples to allow the buckets to sit futher back in the grill.. the 56 buckets are recessed, while the 53-55 are bug eyed on top.

(and found a new truck project with a complete 56 chrome grill 2 weeks later!)..

I'm pretty sure there is no difference in the buckets but the dust shields on the 56 have an indent in them due to the 56 grille setting back in further. With the 54 shields the 56 grill will bottom out the buckets before the grill is in all the way.

the 56 buckets are different for sure, you will have to make the others work or get 56 buckets which is no easy task.

Thanks for the info. So the number of springs means nothing as for as what year? I bought new air dams/deflectors at the Supernationals this year and they fit great as well as the new steel gravel shield/lower valance. The size seemed to be the same but i'll re-check. Thanks Steve

the size of the air dams is the same.. the 56's just have a dimple in them to seat the buckets back a little further.. the 53-55 are flat all the way across.
(I have both sets in the garage, and using the 56 dimpled on my 55 truck)..

Yea, Sam is right. I hope you bought the 56 air dams so that you have the caved in dimples. Otherwise, you won't have room for the setback buckets. I'm not recommending this, but I have heard of some people getting so desperate, that they cut large holes in the air dams to accomodate the headlight buckets.
