4.9l engine swap questions

I have a 1984 F150 w/ 4.9-6 and want to know if a 96 4.9-6 long block will work in it if I change the intake/head to use the carb gear rather than try to convert the rig to efi.

I have low oil presure issues and can get a whole truck for little dollars but the 1984 body is much better than the newer one.

Whenever I have a problem like this I call a local parts yard. They have books, or computers to tell them what will interchange. Give that a try.

How's this. I'm sure enough that if it were me, I'd do it. Any problems, if any, can be addressed here. If you are confident enough to swap a motor, I can't think of any problems you shouldn't be able to handle.

The '96 block won't have the mechanical fuel pump hole. However, the mount bolt holes are there (& threaded) as well as the lobe on the cam. You can either go with an electric pump, or just drill out a hole. If you're going to drop the oil pan anyway, drilling the hole would probably be your best option.

And there's the proof. First problem already solved.

Thanks!

I think they are some minor differences in the heads on the efi motors and the carb motor you should check that before doing the swap

zomby351 is right (I had to re-read, you said LONGBLOCK, not SHORTBLOCK!). The heads are slightly different, mainly the combustion chamber shape & the type of rocker arms. What it'll mainly mean is that you need to time the engine slightly different than what you did before or you'll burn a piston. Check www.fordsix.com for details. The advantage to the head will be that there are extra bolt holes for the EFI exhaust (cast-iron dual exhaust headers) that make them easier to bolt up. If you can snag the EFI exhaust, do so if not, no big deal, your stock '84 manifolds will bolt up just fine.
The main thing with this swap (like many others) is to grab as much as possible from the donor truck & them carefully swap from the old motor to the new. In all reality, this swap will most likely be more strait forward than it seems here on the board...
Good luck.
