Hi all. My 05 PSD runs rough when cold and is not really driveable for at least 5-10 mins of warmup. I know diesels normally are like this but it seems excessive. Outside temperature around 50F right now. Upon initial start, it lopes for about 30 seconds or so then gradually clears up. If I try to drive it less than 5 minutes after starting, it stumbles, misses and completely lacks power at anything above 2000 rpm.
1. seems to make no difference using command start or not.
2. no difference if I cycle glow plugs twice before starting.
3. crank time is normal.
4. this morning was the first time it did not stay running when started with remote (and its not cold, 60F)
5. Has been getting worse as temperature drops.
6. have used Stanadyne in last 2 tanks, no difference.
7. Getting due for oil change but use good oil (Shell)
8. runs perfect once warmed up.
9. truck has 199,000 km (123,000 miles) and I do not know the maintenance history.
So, the questions.
1. Is the computer not allowing me to drive it cold, protecting the engine?
2. Are my glow plugs bad? and if so, which ones? or just change them all since they are cheap?
3 Injectors going?
I usually just start mine up and go. Starts the first time every time and I just wait for the "Wait to start" light to go out. Although if it gets any colder, I will be pluggin mine in. It has been down to the mid 30's these past few nights and no problems. It is a little sluggish when I first start out, but it doesn't take long for it to warm up and go. As for the "loping", I get that someimes. I just touch the gas a little and it goes away. COuld be something else going on with yours. Anyone else have any imput?
It is most likely your injectors sticking. Go down to the 6.0L forum and read around as this is a common problem. The first things to try would be going to the dealer and getting the latest PCM flash which passes electric current through the injectors before startup in order to help free them up. Also, some peopl ehave had good luck running the Hot Shot Secret Oil Additive which was designed specifically for this problem. Check out this thread on it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...?highlight=hss
Update. had the dealer do the latest "flash" this week. Truck starts great, idles great right away and is driveable right away (don't have to let it run for 10 minutes first). I am one happy camper. Probably the best $124.00 I ever spent (on a vehicle) Thanks all for the great insight again!

This is exactly what my truck is doing right now and I have 32K miles on my 2006. And during this warmup time my truck is emitting white smoke. Takin it to the dealer soon.
Mine rarely smoked and when it did it was bluish black and hardly noticeable. If you have white smoke, that sure sounds like something else....water (fingers crossed). Hope the update will work for you.
Try 10w30 oil during colder season, had rolling throttle on my 01 PS after a recent oil change and went back to dealer and they changed the oil from 15/40 to 10/30 and worked out. Temps around here from -5 to +10C Good Luck!!
Yes, thanks, I know that makes a big difference cause I just did an oil change and used Pennzoil 15w40 diesel oil. (only stuff in town in a 5 gallon pail and the right specs) big mistake, It definately ran worse when cold. Am going to change it again right away and use the proper stuff even if I have to buy it by the liter.
