351 oil pump

I recently replaced the motor (351) in my 1985 F250.

I did not pay attention to the removal and subsequent re-installation of the oil pump shaft. The new shaft has a spring type washer on it.

Where is the washer, which can be moved up and down the shaft, to be placed, at which end, etc.

I have already installed the new pump and pan without installing the oil pump shaft.

Can I drop the shaft down from the top without the spring type washer?

Thanks, Tom F.

That washer is designed to keep the oil pump shaft from coming up out of the oil pump if you ever take the distributor out. Ideally the washer should go towards the top of the block so it will only move up 1/2" or less but never fully disengage the pump. You can drop the pump drive shaft into the block through the top without the washer and it will work just fine. Just be careful if you ever have to replace the distributor that you don't drop the shaft down into the oil pan.

Thanks a lot. I asked at the local garage (1) and they came up with the same conclusion.

I have the engine on a stand and think I will drop in the shaft without the washer.

It is just a plow truck that I only put about 1,000 miles on a year.

If it runs when I get it together, I don't plan to take it apart.

Down the road I hope to do a restoration on it, I like old trucks.

Thanks again for the reply.

well if its on an engine stand still. take the extra 10 minutes and make it worth your investment. Imagine what it will be like if you do drop the shaft into the pan when the engines in the truck.
