Howdy gang, I have a 1993 ranger and if I make a sharp turn while engaged in 4 wheel drive, I get a very loud grinding sound. Seems ok until I turn the wheel and seems to be coming from the passenger side. Truck still has the original auto hubs.
Do not do that on pavement and/or hard packed dirt.
Does it do it in 2hi?
If it does not then you have to look at ujoints, axles, diff, 4x related items.
Doing this online is tough.
Also try being really, really detailed in your description.
The truck turns fine in 2hi, with no noticeable noise. I have not used the 4 wheel drive all summer, so yesterday, I decided I should check and see if it would engage. Pushed the button and the module light went on and felt like the front wheels locked in. I slowly drove around the yard on the fairly soft grass. The noise is a combination of a squeking sound (like someone bouncing up and down on the springs) and a grind and seems to be coming from the passenger side only.
I have new shocks on the front and recently had the brakes and wheel bearings done, as well as the seals replaced. Ball joints were ok, as well.
Is there a u-joint in the axle that could be froze up? I don't see any grease fittings, but I have a hard time getting under there to see real well. My kid borrowed my big jack and hasn't brought it back.
It is most likely your automatic hubs. I'm surprised they have lasted this long. Get a set of manual ones. I got mine at a junkyard for 50 bucks for the pair, and then another 50 bucks for the lock ring conversion, and now its good to go.
Well, it does have a clunk, and a grind, and a kind of springy screech all wrapped up into one. ;o) With my luck, the hub and the u-joint are both shot.
Because of cost, I will probably go with manual hubs, but I sure like the ease of those automatic ones. Just hard to put that much money into the old truck especially after an old gal t-boned me about a month ago. It was a pretty nice looking truck until then. Still drives good, but the box is dented pretty good between the cab and the rear tire on the driver side. She didn't hit me hard, just hard enough to make it ugly and hurt whatever value it had.
If your hubs are the same ones I have on my '97 4x4, the grinding may be the result of the hub not fully engaging. I fixed my problem with a couple of 26 cent washers and a couple hours of my time. May be within your capabilities if it applies.
