5.4 spark plugs

I just bought a 04 F250 with the 5.4. It has 45000 miles on it. I have service the engine "oil, fliters, belt, anti freeze and the tranny". I also would like to change the spark plugs. It runs fine but will be plowing with it this winter and want it all done. I was told not to touch the plugs, leave them til I absolutl need too. I will have nothing but problems with the heads. Is this true?I heard of the early 5.4 plugs blowing out but thought that problem was fixed. Should I leave them orcan I change them?

I had mine changed @ 55,000 miles. Came out fine, but put antisieze on them when they where put back in. If you leave them til they do need changed they may not come out as easy.

At 45000 miles they should be fine, and I personally would leave them alone. If you decide to change them search around here for the proper procedure. It is very important to get them torqued to the correct value.

I've done the plugs on my Dad's '00 F250 5.4 and its really not that hard to change them out... a little tricky dealing with the fuel rails and the far plug on the pass. side is a PITA but doable.

Make sure you use Motorcraft plugs, antiseize the threads and proper torque as said above and you'll be fine. Use a piece of rubber tube or air hose to properly thread the new ones on.

Its a good idea to change the plug boots also when doing a plug change. As said before put anti-seize on the plug threads and also put some dielectric tune-up grease in each end of the COP boots.

It is a good idea to change plugs at a max of 50k miles. If you go 100k miles the plugs are going to be very worn. People have reported changing plugs at 100k and having the gap of the plug wear to .100", the recommended gap is .054". They wore that much.

The best plugs and boots to put back in is Motorcraft replacements. No other brand works better than Motorcraft.

Make sure to look up the proper torque specs for the plugs. It should be 13 or 14 ft. lbs.

More threads were added (At least to the 6.8l) to the heads late into the 02' production year.

The plugs still should not be left in the head for more than 50k both due to wear and galling.

You should change the boots. They can fail electrically, but still look OK.
