power hungry 6.9L
I am new here and new to F250,s, so please excuss my lack of knowledge.
I have a 1984 F250, 6.9L, 4x4, auto, cab & 1/2 and has only 100000 miles.
I purchased the truck to replace my 93 Landcruiser 4.2L diesel turbo, as I want to tow a 3500kg (6500lb 7000lb?) trailer and (collectable car) payload and I am now concerned that the F250 has a lack of power? I must admit I have not tried towing yet, but the truck seems sluggish? little RPM and power? I feel I would have been better off with the Landcruiser?
What "cheap" power increase options do I have? or do you think I would be supprised with the towing preformance?
Cheers
Gary
Welcome to the IDI diesel forum.
If you are running rather flat ground, 7000 pounds should make very little difference.
Clean fuel filter?
Clean air filter?
Run a double dose of Diesel Kleen through the fuel system to clean deposits out of the fuel system.
If the stock water seperator is still in the fuel circuit, it may be sucking air into the fuel system.
That makes a large hit on the power output.
Making a ram air setup and a larger exhaust system will help the engine breathe a lot better.
The stock system was rather small.
How much black smoke do you see out the exhaust when working the engine?
How well does it start cold and hot?

Thanks for the great reply
There is some black smoke, under pressure, but not enough for me to say "WTF". I would say about normal for a large diesel, older truck, but curtainly more than my landcruiser.
Starts perfectly when hot.
Starts after about 10 seconds of cranking when cold.
The truck has a full service record ever 5000km (3500miles)
Is the ram air setup you refer to, a simple ducting from grill to air cleaner, to get cool fresh air?
I could always pull the ram air unit off my Boss 429 HEMI mustang and give that a go...lol
Thanks again
