It Says To Preload Your Pinion And Ring, How Do You Preload? 2nd It Says To Preload Your Pinion And Tighten Nut To 25 Inch Lbs. That Isn't Alot Of Torque. Don't Really Understand The Crush Bearing Either. Info Please.
Do a search on this site there are probably hundreds answering this. Also Google I know there are lot's of sites that have nice color pictures with a lot more detail than a chilton or haynes manual, I'm sure you can find a site with exactly your rear end.
You do have marking compound right? You my want to pick up another crush in case you have to redo it since this is your first one!! Make sure you rent or buy a inch pound torque wrench don't try to guess at those. I got the craftsmen one I mostly just use the newton readings on it, It was pretty reasonably priced. I would break in the new gear set with regular dino gear lube, Drive 5-10 miles depending on ambient temp at sane speeds nothing over 55mph, let cool down 20,30 minutes, do it twice. Then change out lube and check for excessive wear while your in there, Go for another 10 mile drive, If you got a infra red thermometer it would be nice for the break in, feel the pumpkin on the bottom and the input bearing area if it doesn't feel too hot, let it cool. Go for a good drive maybe 20 miles at increasing speeds maybe a 75mph for a mile or two then drop down to normal speed and head home.Check the temp, Change out the lube to what ever you are going to use (synthetic or dino) If there was no excessive metal flakes or anything out of the ordinary. It may seem ocd to swap out the lube and do all the break in but it could be the difference in it being a good rebuild or a crap one!! Tower hobbies has Dura trax infra red thermometers for $24.99 it is pretty decent and reads up to 450 degrees.
I Have Done Several Rears, But Not The Professional Way. Always Had A Good Marking Pattern, But The Most Problem Is The Pinion Coming Loose. Can't Get Crush Bearing Correct. Randy's Ring Told Me That I Might Need To Press The Crush, But I Would Never Know How Much. It Don't Make Any Logic To Me To Press It.
You don't preload the ring and pinion. There has to be some clearance there, gear lash, usually around .010". You do preload the carrier bearings though & the drive pinion.
Adjusting preload on the carrier bearings is done differently depending on the rear. Some use adjuster nuts, wedges, or shimms.
The inch pound # is refering to rotating torque of the pinion installed without the carrier. It will take some force to start the crush collar to set the preload. You only have one shot at it so tighten slow. If it gets too tight you will need a new collar.
