E4OD Fluid Change

Hey Folks,
I had a trans code set on my truck so I took her to a trans shop to diagnose the problem. He drove it around, cleared the code and drove around again. His professional opinion was that the tranny was ok as he felt but the only way to tell if there is a problem is to drop the pan and check for damages. I told him i'd drop the pan to save the $100 service. I changed the fluid and have been driving around with no problems, no lights - to which I understand doens't necessarily solve my problem however if there was a mechanical breakdown, what would I have found in the pan? I found a lot of metallic particles stuck to the magnet. The vehicle has 150,000 miles on it and is behind a turbo diesel. As far as I know its a stock trans and likely on its way out. I'd like to try and squeak a few more miles out of it before I dump $2500 into it. What are my chances that im ok? The crap I found seemed to be normal wear im my opinion for a 150,000 mile trans.

Any thoughts, opinions????

Thanks!!!!

The metallic particles on the magnet is normal. Did you drain the torque converter too?

Metallic fuzz and a few metallic particles on the magnet are normal, especially if the fluid was never changed in 150,000 miles.

What you don't want to see is rice sized or bigger chunks and more than 3 or 4 of them. The rest of what should be on the magnet is grey fuzz.

The fluid if it has been in there for 150K would probably be pink or maybe brown. Good fluid is red. It should not smell burnt.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

I do if the converter has a drain plug on it.
Dropping the pan and draining the converter will get a majority of the trans fluid out. I dumped nearly 19 quarts back in mine (I have a B&M pan that holds an extra three quarts over stock) the last time I dropped the pan and drained the converter and trans cooler.

You should have. How many quarts did it take to fill after you drained the pan? The trans and torque converter hold about 17 quarts. If you didn't use that much (and you didn't) you just mixed several new quarts with quite a few old quarts.

Go read this article. It will show you how to change all your fluid. I'd do it now.
