Overheating - uphill or with a load

Guys, I am looking for a little insight before I head to the dealer with this problem. During the summer I noticed my fan coming on more often. I checked the coolant and it was very low (over a gallon to fill up.) I have now doen this multiple times and it seems as soon as i top it off it all comes back out.

Not sure of the extact exit point but there are signs of antifreeze all over the underside of the hood. I am hoping its not a head gasket but I have no idea what else could be the problem.

I can run all day long with nor problems unless i hit a really big hill / small mountian or when I am pulling a load and it typically happens when I hit a hit as well. i simply think what coolant is left moves in the radiator and it starts to overheat.

Thanks for any help.

What year truck and engine do you have?

Without knowing, my first guess would be you're overheating with a load or pulling hills because your transmission is getting hot. I could be wrong, you may not even have an automatic, but I'd say you need to add some cooling capacity to your transmission.

So Sorry about not giving all the necessary info.

I hava 2006 4wd with 53k on the clock. It has banks dual exhaust, hypertech tuner, a pureoil aluminum reusable oil filter and a aftermarket air filter in the stock air box. other than that it is stock.
I have a transmission temp guage and i monitor it too and it has been fine.

Again, any coolant I add is typically gone in the first 20 miles. I have actually had people wave me down and tell me i was dumping fluid all over the place!

Thanks

What engine? What transmission manual or auto?

If it's the factory trans temp gauge, it's pretty much worthless.

No, that really isn't good.

Have you tried reverting to a stock tune to see if it will help?

Are you thinking head gasket too? I have only towed with this truck about 20 times in the 1.5 years I have had it and drive mainly interstate for the 53k miles on the clock.
I just cant figure out why anytime I fill the anitfreeze reserve tank it ends up all over the left side of the engine and under my hood. I guess FORD will be able to figure it out.

First, welcome to the site. If you scroll down a little farther on the main forum page there is a forum specifically for the 6.0L engine. There is a lot of information in there that you will find helpful.

That being said the first thing to do is remove the chip/program and set it back to stock. If you do that and are still having coolant puking issues it is most likely either the EGR cooler, or head gaskets.

Well I have a 05 SD 6.0 auto with a Super Chips programmer set to Tow mode, as well as the truck in tow mode. Mine overheats as well going up a hill, ONLY if I let the tranny drop down a gear or to to try to keep up the speed. If I let it lug up the hill, I obviously lose speed, but no overheating. However, I do not puke coolant. I can pull my 37' 5th wheel down the road at 75-80 all day until I hit the big hills. I've have the tranny fluid changed as well as the coolant flushed. Same thing.
I refuse to bring it to Ford only for them to tell me that my 5" exhaust, and after market air filter are the cause.

On the other hand, don't let it lug too much. Engines are engineered to spin at high rpms. Being in too high a gear and lugging the engine is hard on its internal bearings.

my 2 cents

Yeah, I'm aware of that. I only keep my foot on it until it wants to drop down a gear.
I can let it drop down and barely keep my foot on it and it still overheats.

Degas bottle cap or water pump. Just a guess but that's where I'd start looking.
