My grandpa has a red '76 F250 Custom 4x4 Highboy. It's sitting in the shed at his house. It hasn't moved in quite a while. It has the original 360, 4 speed, power steering, power disc brakes and factory A/C. He bought it in '78 for my uncle to drive. It's all original except the tires. I'm not sure of the mileage. How rare are these things? Was '76 the last year of the Highboy or was it '77?
I would like to restore it and drive it because you don't see the Highboy's very often. My other uncle has a '75 that runs a 360/4 spd, and he uses it to spray his fields with, another '76 in town, and my former boss who has a '77 that he mothballed because he has a different pickup. He said it was a 400 auto.
Are these Highboys good off road 4x4s? I would like to modify mine to go off roading. What are your ideas?
finding a 1 owner truck like that is rare. they stopped making highboys halfway through '77. usually you're better off to tie a rope around a 360 and use it as a boat anchor because of the horrible gas mileage with no power return in those years but since you know its history I'd probably keep it and do a few performance mods. highboys are pretty popular around here in west virginia for restorations and trail use.
I didn't know they made the highboys until a few weeks ago..
They tecnically did not make "Highboys" Ford made 4x4 F-250's.
We simply called them Highboys. This is nothing more than a nickname for 73 to 77.5 f-250 4x4 trucks.
I'm looking for an old ford truck to drive daily.. What is the most reliable engine that I should look for?
One that runs, and has a displacement smaller than 303 cubic inches. Seriously, with the price of gas, do you want something that is going to drink gas like it was beer on prom night?
