1978 f150 4x4 with a 400 engine. i have a full time 4x4 truck. i want to swap my transfer case with a 205 and get new drive shafts, crossmember, blah blah. someone told me that the 205 will not bolt up to my tranny thats in the truck now. something about the input shafts on the t-cases are different and the bolt patterns are not the same. anyone else had experience doing this swap? thanks!!
I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe I've heard that the inputs on the transfer cases were different between autos and manuals so if you have an auto trans. the donor transfer should come from an automatic truck
205's were available in those trucks, and ford used a 6 bolt pattern. This pattern is different than the others (chebby and dodge).
Ford input was 31 spline. The only difference was the length of the adapter and output shaft.
chebby had three different splines and dodge offered only the 23 spline (although I have heard war stories about a 29 spline, but have never laid eyes on one).
The 205 swap is a bit of work, and can cause some trouble if you have an auto and a short adapter. Here is a link to read. We were discussing this some time ago.
MBBFord has just performed a similar swap with mixed reviews.
Do you do a bunch of off roading? you are half way to a doubler. I love mine, but maybe that is a little to much for some.
Anyway, happy reading.
