Need more info.

Does it happen when hot or cold? Do you have an automatic or standard transmission? How long have you had this condition?

What kind of car?

happens when im driving. i'll stop for traffic and when i go to go again, pressing on gas petal, rpm's go way up but car doesn't move. have to put it in park, then in drive. ususally that gets it going. if not, i have to turn car off and just restart it. then it will go.

automatic

been like this for a good 2-3 weeks.

1997 taurus wagon.

161,000 miles.

Have you checked the transmission fluid?

Sounds like the old tranny needs some attention.
Like bigrigfixer said, check the fluid for level and condition, all in all the tranny might/will need some work done to it.

EGR is not related.

So the problem happened AFTER the trans flush? Or before, and the flush didn't help?

Maybe recheck the fluid level. In a flush, they only put back in what they take out. If it's low to begin with, it'll be low afterwards. Unless you got a good technician who checks his work, it'll most likely be still low.

what do i do about the shop that put a new egr in then?
problem was before the flush, and still is a problem.
as for the trans flush itself regarding fluid, i did it myself, so i put in 4 quarts and checked it many many many times putting in more as needed till it was in the right area on the stick.

You own a new EGR, nothing much you can do at this point.
You said the tranny was slipping before you had it looked at?

I hate to ask this, did you use the correct tranny fluid?

You really should have a tranny shop take a look at the car, it sounds like you need work done to the high mileage tranny.

Not much you can do about the new egr. That system is totally unrelated with what you are experiencing.

Is the fluid level still where it should be? Did you replace the filter too?

My friend has an Aerostar and replaced the filter. The van was able to move again. This is a good place to check also.
Keep us posted.

Bite the bullet and take it to a tranny shop. That is what I would do, sounds like internal/mechanical failure.

I hate to break this to you, but that only changes about 1/4 of the transmission fluid. There's a lot of fluid in the torque converter and in the rest of the tranny that doesn't get changed when you do it this way.

Also, I think you'd know it if the tranny was slipping that badly, then engine would be revving like that *all* the time, not just part of the time.

To me, it sounds like the MLPS is bad. It's a sensor that tells the transmission what the shift lever says. Sometimes it thinks the tranny is in neutral but it's really not. When you put it into park and then back to drive, it resets it so it knows to be in drive again.

I really would hold off on taking it to a tranny shop. That will most likely cost you a lot of money no matter what.
