360 to 390

I'm looking at buying 2 360 engines. I believe they are around mid 70s. I want to build them into 390s. What is the main difference? I was told the cranks were different, then I was told that they were the same, but the rods and pistons were different. I was also told I need to bore the block .030, is this true? I'm building the engine for race not pull. What kind of horse will I be pushing? I'm looking for 300+, is it possible? I've looked around on the internet for good websites on 390s or 360s, but can't find any. I'm only 21 and I'm building my first engine, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

A 390 has a differant crank, rods, and pistons. The 360 and 390 have the same bore. Eric

Aaron, a 360 is a detuned 390. It is a 390 block with a 352 crank. A 390 crank and piston set will make your 360 a 390.

Got it?? :-)

Their right, it's the same block. All you need is 390 pistons, rods and crank.

As for the 300+HP, no problem.
Start with a zero deck (pistons comes to top of block at TDC) 390, a little port work on the heads (exhaust, bowl and port match mostly), good dual pattern cam, Edelbrock RPM intake and Holley 600 or larger vac sec 4v carb, headers and electronic ign like pertronix.

Check some of the other posts about the oiling mods so that you'll get a long life engine and run at least 6+ qts of oil. You'll be at 300+ easy, a well built 390 can get into the 400 range, so 300+ should be very streetable.
